Mike :
Thanks very much for today's show. Some great songs I had never heard before. This pre-rock music deserves to be rediscovered, or discovered by people like me who were born after those years.

Mike,
Just caught the encore show tonight as I missed the Sunday one - another great one with so much info on all the other singers of the time. Looking forward to your regular schedule with practically all-Doris. You do such a wonderful job with all your info to add to the show...real musical history!

Thank you and FredNetRadio for teaming up together for this lovely show...I keep telling people about it and can't wait for your very special Birthday Show!

Update on Magic63 radio

New postby Lauren Benjamin » Fri Feb 26, 2010 3:19 pm

Here is an update on Magic63 AM radio located in the Carmel area. This is the station that for years has broadcast a celebration on Doris' birthday. I spoke to someone at the station this morning, who informs me that Ed Dickinson is still at the station. His show is from 8-12 noon Pacific time on weekends.

Should there for a broadcast in honor of Doris' birthday again this year, you can still listen to Mike's show (should it interfere time wise with Mike) on the following Wednesday.

The station is *not* a rap station. It is now playing 50s to 70s rock. Here is some info on the station:

KIDD (630 AM), "Oldies 630," is a radio station broadcasting an Oldies music format. For many years the station offered an Adult Standards/MOR format, using the moniker "Magic 63." On April 7, 2009, the station quietly shifted to a different playlist comprising a wide range of mid-1950s to 1970s pop songs. The morning hours are hosted by Kevin Kahl, who had been an on-air voice for "Magic 63." Weekend host Ed Dickinson's long-running "Way Back Now" music-nostalgia program has survived the format change. The station is licensed to and located in Monterey, California, USA; it serves the Monterey Bay Area, including the communities of Santa Cruz, Watsonville, Salinas and the Monterey Peninsula. KIDD's signal stretches from the Santa Cruz Mountains on the north to the middle Salinas Valley on the south. The station is currently owned by Buckley Communications, Inc.

Here is the phone # to the station, if you would like to inquire about a birthday broadcast for Doris this year.

What makes Magic63 special is that Doris phones in and we get to listen to her - so please, Lauren, Mike, anyone, keep us posted if there is any chance of hearing her again this year. It would be sad if we never hear from her again. I think she enjoyed those shows and it was a great way for her to thank all of her many fans,

Doris will know that Frednet is also ready to receive a call if she chooses to call in. The station is working out the technicalities as I write this. I am certainly no personality like Ed Dickinson whom Doris knows personally, and there is no guarantee, but the option is there if she chooses to use it.

Bryan~
Since you are the head guy here and since you asked, I do have an update, but I wasn't going to say anything on the forum until I found out for sure. So, here is what little I found out this morning.

I called Ed Dickinson during this shift at Magic63 this morning (2/27/10) and he answered the phone. He is a very nice gentleman with a huge place in his heart for Doris. His wife is fan, also. I spoke with him for about 30 seconds and then all of a sudden he put me on the radio! I didn't mind except that I felt uncomfortable asking certain questions as this was being heard all over Carmel.

I simply asked him if he knew one way or the other about a celebration for Doris' birthday this year. He said that management said that they were going to do it but lately they have been up and down about it. He said that they suggested to him (this was in our private conversation) that they record the show during his shift but play it during Kevin Kahl's show. He did *not* seem to be very happy about that idea. I think that idea comes from a time issue - that 8-12 in the morning would not be a good time when one considers the world wide audience.

He mentioned something that I didn't know and was astounded to hear. During last year's show, there were 3 MILLION LISTENERS!!!!!! With those numbers, I can hardly believe that the station would not want streaming audio for the birthday show again this year, but I think there might be a problem with getting behind on advertisements during the birthday shows. That might be an issue.

Mr. Dickinson was very kind, but could only tell me that they were having meetings *next week* to decided what to do and for me to keep in touch. I will do that. I've told you everything I know. Keep your fingers crossed. I don't have the e-mail address for the station. But I think it would be helpful for people to e-mail them about the birthday show. It might help.

BTW, Mr. Dickinson is at the station on weekends only. Here is the phone # - 1-800-550-3663. You could call at any time and simply ask the person who answers the phone for the e-mail address for someone in management.

Stay tuned, as they say,
Lauren

Thanks for that, Lauren. That's amazing about the number of listeners. I think Ed is right not to agree to the management's idea of not broadcasting it live - either do it properly or not at all. It sounds like they don't realise what they have in terms of audience appreciation - even the stars tune in. However, I feel optimistic that they will make the right decision. Would it help if as many of us as possible emailed the station to encourage - plead even! - with them to retain what has now become an annual celebration of Doris' legacy?

If that doesn't work, Mike, have you considered approaching Doris about talking to you on air on her birthday?

The offer is out there; the radio station is ready; the show will be live from 1-4 EST on April 4. The choice is hers whether or not she calls Magic63. No one says she can't make two phone calls..one to the West Coast and one to the East Coast. Obviously, the guys on the West Coast already have "the connection"; we are just getting started. We are certainly no less interested. The station director, Keith Angstadt, is ready and willing.

I think Doris would have to be invited to call into Frednet, then, the choice would in her hands. Could this be arranged?

Thanks for a lovely list of songs Mike.It makes it so much easier to place the songs, when they started and all the ones being recorded by Doris "in her own style"later, like "making whoopy".
I think we should all put in a massive plead to get Doris calling in on her birthday. It is extra special now, since it will be the 3rd.
Of course it is fabulous how many listeners there are that day for Magic 63.So it is 1 or the other,Doris can swap for the East-coast perhaps...

kkahl@magic63.com

This is e-mail address of Mr Kevin Kahl on Magic 63. Last year I sent a thank note to him for broadcasting the DD show and asked for a link, which he kindly posted to me. I was going to give the link to the Forum, but another fan did it before me.

Hi Mike,

I'm very glad you brought this information about re-broadcasting the whole show Sentimental journey. I wondered, if this will happen and almost asked Mr. Keith. Now all is clear and I'm happy about it. I will try to record every show. Now I have better PC, but don't know, why broadcasts (streaming) are so many times interrupt. Not only that, Mozilla firefox crashed many times also. It would be the best solution, if we get the link as for Birthday show. I'm affraid, this isn't possible. Isn't it?
Mike, never can thank you enough for your great job. Be well and keep doing it, please.

doubtful. Keith was reluctant to share the links for the bday broadcast, but because it is a done deal, he agreed. The DD Show he can rerun forever, if he wants, so I doubt very seriously that he would provide them for free.
Thanks for your many kind comments.
