1985: DORIS DAY'S "BEST FRIENDS" TV SERIES

I am trying to post (finally) the songs from the 1985 tv series that I had on a cassette tape and have been able to transfer to cd, to computer, and hopefully now to those of you who want them. ENJOY!!

I look forward to hearing some of these when I get home from work tonight - I have heard most and my favourites are most certainly - 'My Heart' and [especially] - 'You are so beautiful to me' -. Unfortunately for the most part the quality of the songs here and the arrangements are below par: but not the quality of the vocals!

The real shame here is that it shows what Doris Day could still do with a song in her 60s- & that she didn't really get into recording again around this time and record gems such as Rosemary Clooney was recording for Concord jazz label around the same time! So many missed opportunities!

I love that song " Heaven Tonight" and you are right it could have been a hit single as well as " This Is The Way I Dreamed It". Beautiful songs. She still had it when she recorded those songs in 1985-1986. I'm sure if she was to sing now it would be just as beautiful, no double in my mind.

Mike, Thank you so much for posting these lovely songs. It moves my heart to hear "ryans on his way to the round up " knowing how much his daddy loved him and wrote this cute little song for his grandma to sing to him. Terry sure was talented . I think that doris still had a pretty good voice even being in her 60s. Her voice was not the pure silk it used to be but still very nice,and mature sounding . Most people loose their voices as they get older, but doris still could have performed had she wanted to. Thanks again ,mike I really enjoyed it.

Thanks so much for posting these! Without a DVD release of the series, we may not have another opportunity to hear them. I really enjoyed all of them, although I understand Doris wasn't thrilled with the quality of the recording studio. It's true, the sound and the production behind her don't do her justice, but I sill love hearing these performances. There's a sweetness about them that touches your heart. Clearly, this show was a labor of love for Doris, Terry and everyone connected with it. That's enough for me.

Yes, someone at the 1987 Convention commented on the recordings - particularly 'You are so Beautiful to me'- and the high note etc and Doris said something along the lines of '...well, I'm singing to them, the animals...'
She also told that hilarious story of the sex cinema being near the recording studio where she recorded these songs and she'd see these men driving in...- and a big dog that used to come up to the cinema kiosk desk and stand on its hind legs- it was a Kerryblue- and she nick named it 'Blue' but when she told this story to those at the convention-it sounded as if she had named the dog after the [adult/ blue movies]- causing much laughter!

I suppose we shouldn't compare, but look at the difference in the quality of Doris' voice vs. that of say Dinah Shore or Rosemary Clooney. Both were extremely talented singers, but they really did NOT have the ability to maintain the notes. They often drifted off-key and did not have the power to hold notes for very long Doris, on the other hand, still had those abilities and could have still been recording. As someone said earlier, alot of missed opportunities! I'm so glad that Mike posted these songs; I remember every one of them from "Best Friends"....

I think my fave is "Wildfire," although I can't say why. It just touches me. Too bad she never did a real studio recording of that song with proper back-up. She really could have had a great album of 60's & 70's soft rock songs, as "Wildfire" and "Both Sides Now" amply demonstrate.

Is there any hope this series will be released on DVD? I've only seen excerpts from a few of the shows on You Tube up to now. Would really love to have every one of these for posterity. Does anyone know?

At the 1987 Doris day convention in Carmel Doris told an amuseing story about the recording session in nearbye Monterey. Across the street where Doris was singing her heart out was an adult mens bookstore and Doris observed the many questionable men in and out od the bookstore which Doris said was sickening. The recording gig with Terry was probably the summer of 1985 for the Best friends cable TV show for the 1985/86 TV season.
Another show biz tidbit was at the 1993 evening party for the DD weekend event with many celebrities that aired on Entertainment Tonight shareing their thoughts about Doris. Desi Arnaz was there, Lucille Ball's son. I wanted to tell him I got my nickname Ricky from the I Love Lucy show because my Brother hated the name Raymond and told everyone that was my name. Lucy had the baby named Ricky on the show the year I was born. To this day people back north still call me Ricky.
I feel so blessed to have had these memories of seeing Doris in person. Someitmes it seems like a dream but it was all very real. Never thought I would meet my dreamgirl twice! I also was standing next to Clint Eastwood at this star studded event. I was with the biggest and best on the planet, Doris and Clint! Other extra was Susanne Sommers singing I will Survive and the Beach Boys, Vivkie lawrence, Loni Anderson and leonard maltin. What a night that was!!!
