A Golden Moment/Honoring Doris Day

Though it seems to show that Doris doesn't like to watch herself on the screen, doesn't it? She hardly looks up when the film scenes are shown and when James Garner speaks someone has to show her where to see him... Cute

This was the Golden Globes - Lifetime Achievement Award 1989- and didn't Doris look superb? Yes Marion, she seemed very deep in thought when most of the clips were being shown.

I agree...it was 1989. Thanks for posting the whole video. I remember watching it at the time, and being so proud of our Doris. She looked wonderful that night. She did tend not to watch herself on the screen...we all know that she doesn't like to do that. But, I also thought there may have been some melacholy moments for her, when you consider how many of her leading men were gone and the memories she must've had of Marty on each of those films.

I agree, so many thoughts must have been going through Doris' head.

We have talked about this night before and about the clips shown. Whilst the Winning Team was funny [and no one laughed more than Doris]- it was a waste of time and so many more clips should/ could have been shown. I would have chosen:-

Romance on the High Seas - Doris singing 'Its you or no one...'
Young Man with a Horn - either a band stand scene or the scene by the sea front with Kirk;
Young at Heart- either on the beach in her shorts or a tense moment with Frankie boy;
Calamity - was fine [as shown];
Love me or Leave me- the scene in the dressing room [after Ruth sings Ten cents a dance]- where she snaps at Marty 'What do you want, a thank you note?'
Man who knew too much - was fine [as shown];
Pajama Game - probably the scene where she tells Sid she'll be fighting hard for her side and there's something about being part of team... -and a singing scene too!
Teacher's Pet - the scene where she is confronted by Jim Gannon - 'who & what & where...' -in the class room!
Pillow Talk - the scene where she is trying to get Brad to admit they are more than just friends 'is that all it is with you, a friendship?'- that scene is magnificently played and [to me] shows why Doris rightly got an Oscar nomination for this part;
Daisies- with the boys - 'just once in my life I'd like to get dressed without an audience';

Excellent points, Jas. I love that scene from "Please Don't Eat the Daisies". She also tells them to go talk with Adam, and the others say "About what? CokieCola?". Don't you wonder who paid whom to sneak that CokieCola thing in the movie? Usually, it's just a billboard or a Coke bottle, but not in this flick!

Actually, after reading this thread, I think JAS would have done a much better job producing this tribute to Doris. While I agree that she absolutely deserved the honor, I did not feel the tribute did Doris justice. As JAS points out, there were many other, far better film clips to choose from, yet whoever went through all of her films and made the final choices, blew it. It was as if some non-fan or casual admirer randomly gathered a few clips and called it a day. Aside from the breakdown scene from TMWKTM, none of these clips capture Doris at her finest on screen.

And Clint Eastwood should have been horsewhipped for his stammering presentation; I was embarrassed for him. I have the greatest respect for him as a director, producer and actor, but his delivery that night was sorely lacking. I wish Jimmy Garner had been able to be there in person and handed her the award. Now that would have been the thrill of it all. Pun intended.

You are so right, Michael...Clint Eastwood was an embarrassment. If James Garner could not have been there to present the award, I am sure that not ALL of her previous costars were dead when this award was given...ANY OF THEM would have been better. (Eastwood looked like his tie was giving him a problem, as was his lack of being able to read with out glasses...Vanity in the flesh). Better yet, Doris always talks so fondly about the guys in the crews on the films where she worked, think how great that could have been...to be honored by those who are never seen.

I did enjoy the honoring.It's the thought that counts,no matter how it's put together.In my opinion.I think it's great that Doris lives next to Clint Eastwood.Eventhough she hardly goes to Hollywood anymore,and she leads a different life now,does not mean she has become a recluse,which is important for everybody to know.The idea of a fanclub is a fab idea,but what about us outside usa?

Sorry, but I don't agree with the comments above about the tribute to Doris on the Golden Globes. Yes, it was certainly nice that the Hollywood Foreign Press awarded her the Cecil B. DeMille award, but they should have done a much better job with the presentation. Doris rarely made public appearances after the mid-1970's and this was her one and only return to Hollywood after she moved to Carmel. It was a major media event. The tribute should have been as first-rate as the lady herself.

Yes ,I agree with Michael, Jas would have been perfect for the job. The lady pointing out to Doris which side monitor to look at was Jacqueline Melcher (Terrys wife at the time ). That was weird too, that they didnt have the screen where Doris could have seen it much more easily , than to make her turn her head and shoulders around in order to even see Jim give his little speech. Doris having that badly pinched nerve in her neck and back area having to turn and watch in such a uncomfortable way was not too good for her neck. But as always our girl never complains , she is such a trooper. What a great person, WE LOVE YOU DORIS...

Is there any where else where I can see this clip? The embedded YouTube clip is now saying that it's been removed due to copyright violation and I can't find anything similar when searching there.. I never got to see this at the time because I was only 11, so would love a chance to see it now.

I had posted the entire Golden Globe presentation to Doris on YouTube before, only to have YouTube take it down because Dick Clark Productions claimed copyright infringement on my part. Apparently they regularly search YouTube for any DCP production to see if someone is posting clips without permission. So if you post anything, it's best to be creative in titling the clip, as in "A Golden Moment/Honoring Doris Day." I try not to mention a network or use any actual title if I post a YouTube clip. I'd never use American Film Institute or AFI or Golden Globes or Academy Awards in a description. Just using Doris Day in the description will allow fans to find the clip.
