Talking about "The Doris Day Show".

When the DDShow was on tv, I had just started my teaching career. As a dedicated teacher of English, Journalism, Speech and Theatre (including Director of two shows each year as well as adviser to the school newspaper), you can well imagine that I had NO TIME for TELEVISION. So..I missed a lot of the tv shows being shown at that time, including this one.
So that makes it doubly rewarding for me to be able to catch up on one of the things Doris did that i never had the opportunity to see back then. And I love it all...changes included. Doris made it special then; she makes it special now. (Someone mentioned the episode with John Gavin...I haven't hit that one yet, but if I had to select someone that I thought would be a wonderful costar for Doris...in movies as well as in life..that would have been my choice! Gee.. what beautiful babies!!!!)

I really like season 1-3, but after that, without the two boys, that was too weird.
I discovered last night when browsing around youtube, my favorite was "Doris In Hollywood", when her boys entered her in the Doris Day look alike contest! That was very funny! I own the season one box set, but when I can afford it, I'll buy all of them. This one is on season three. I was happy to see that youtube has all of "Doris In Hollywood" and I enjoyed watching it again so much! :D

LPT, That was a great show wasnt it ? I too loved the boys on the show, they were so cute. I didnt like the constant changing of the format . I think the boys could have been worked into her new "city " life . The show seemed more real with the children in it.

Getting rid of the boys made no sense at all. Doris was a very devoted Mother, and was everything in her life. This even made Doris even more wholesome and beautiful. Then she was made into this hard nosed reporter!
In spite of this, I still watch all five seasons because I love Doris so very much!!

I was just thinking about how easily Doris can fit into any role givin to her. A country girl on a farm as in season 1 or a city girl with alot of class. Doris was very real in both of these situations, one great actress for sure.

I sure agree with you Suzie!
And, in her movies, she can play in a slapstick comedy like The Glass Bottom Boat, and also a big drama like Storm Warning! She is talented actress for sure!

I love her look in season 4 when she wears the bob [is it a wig?] - and some of the wonderful evening dresses, such as the magnificent red one when she is on her patio with Carlos; she looks amazing in that scene!

Some are wigs. In "Doris and the Doctor" I think the bob is her own hair or maybe a hairpiece to make her own bob look fuller. I love that cut. Its her signature hairstyle and the most flattering! Wish more women would wear there hair like that.

Last night I was watching season three of "The Doris Day Show."
I have a comment about the show about Doris and Myrna going on a ski trip.
Myrna hurt her ankle going up the stairs. A cute doctor looked at her ankle.
There is something this doctor did on the show that I don't think a writer today would write.
The doctor kept giving Myrna sleeping pills and we all know he kept giving her the pills so she would be asleep, so he can take Doris out to dinner, and with Myrna asleep, Doris would be free to go.
In today's world, with doctors being responsible Michael Jackson and Anna Nicole Smith's death, giving them a crazy amount of drugs , I doubt a TV plot like this would be written again, or I hope not anyway.
Back then it was all in fun, and laugh at stories like this, but when I watched that show last night, it made me sad.

I just got my boxset of the full five seasons delivered from Amazon today, so I can't wait to start watching it. I wasn't born when the series aired, so it'll be my first viewing of the series. Can't wait to start discussing it with you all.

I thought season four was strange when all of the sudden Doris didn't have her two boys anymore. They just vanished! That took some getting used to. But still, I'm crazy about the show! I often watch one before going to bed, to relax me.

The difference in Doris Martin the widow and single Doris Martin shows her acting ability with two different woman being portrayed. Its subtle but shows her range from the nice Motherly type to single Lady in the big city.
The single last two years showed a working woman who dated more than just one man. Doris did it with class and was funny and sexy. What a Today woman is all about. Doris was always in real life a working entertainer and made it look so easy, when in fact it is not. She is a superb actress and should be acknowleded as such!

I loved the Doris Day Show for many reasons - and I feel it was a blessing in disguise for Doris - let's face it, she just lost her husband, Marty and he had signed her to do this 5 year deal with CBS. He died April 2, 1968 and she started filming in June, 1968. She was surrounded by many wonderful people on the set whom she had known over the years - some had worked with her on her movies - it was one big happy family for her and a great support system too.

I worked with her during Season 4 and Season 5 and saw first hand what a great group of people surrounded her. Despite the long hours she worked (had to be at the studio at 7am and left sometime after 7pm) she thrived on this schedule.

Prior to working for Doris, I and a friend had the unique opportunity of meeting her frequently at Bailey's Bakery in Beverly Hills many Saturdays and we talked about her show. She would tell us about incidents on the set and we told her how much we enjoyed her and the show....those were the days!!!! I am truly grateful that I had this incredible opportunity of spending time with this wonderful lady.

Very recently, I've watched season four again, and with an open mind. Knowing that her boys were gone, and that they changed some of the show, I looked at it as a fresh start to the new season four series.
I enjoyed watching it much more this time. Doris kept looking better and better as she got older!

Barb~ Just wanted to tell you how wonderful your quilt looks! I'm sure that Doris loves it and uses it. You have accomplished something very *positive* for Doris at this difficult time in her life. I'm sure it is appreciated.

I have never heard of the rhubarb saying either.

FASHION FIND:
Was re-watching the episode from season one 'The Job' and realised Doris is wearing the suit from Move Over Darling in the first scene (the green suit she wore in MOD to go to Monteray) - only the skirt has been shortened to move with the times!

This is 'at least' the 2nd item of film clothing re-cycled for the show and it is fun to see. I read in the past in the 1960s Miss Day had it written into her contract to keep the screen clothes and this kind of confirms that.

I think the second and third seasons have to be my favorite! I loved the chemistry between Doris and Rosemarie :)

One of my favorite episodes (I'm drawing a blank on which season it was aired), is "Doris Goes to Hollywood". It was cleverly scripted, and the way Doris flipped between being "Doris Martin" and "Doris Day" was just genius, in my opinion :)

I also love the fashion show episodes! Doris is just so beautiful, with such a lovely figure, that she can wear anything--a fashion designer's dream :)

I haven't seen season 5 (it never came out in this region)? - However, of seasons 1-4, season 3 is by far my favourite. During this season, 'Doris goes to Hollywood' aired and I also loved 'Skiing Anyone' and the Christmas episode: almost all of them I adored.

After season 3, I'd put season 2 (very close), Season 1 (the interaction between Doris and the boys is magnificent and so real and she looked fab); and then Season 4.

I also think Doris and Rose-Marie are wonderful together!

Rewatched the third season DVD bonus features and they looked like they were having fun with the bloopers! Rose marie Is very professional but I don't think she was crazy about working with Mary Tyler Moore, but she raves about Doris. Phillip Brown is a very handsome man now and he too enjoyed working with Doris. He even said he would be a perfect husband for Doris if he was older. When they dropped the children on the show after the third season Phillip called Doris and she said she was so sorry but the exceutive producer wanted Doris Martin without children for the fourth season. Phillip also said he saw Doris naked by accident and that she was a beautiful woman! He told her and she said she would have to get her trailer door fixed and not to worry. He was sad Denver Pyle, Mc lean Steveson and Tod Strake are longer with us but he can enjoy them on the DVD and relive the happy memories.
