I FINALLY recieved my DVDs yesterday!!!!!.....

Along with some mail from D. Day!!!!!

She sent me back two things that I had asked her to please sign, and she wrote D. Day in the return address...I thought that was kind of funny!

Isn't it funny how things happen? I waited so long to get the DD shows Season 2 (it seemed like EVERYONE on here got it before me!) and when I did get it, I got something else great in the mail!

Simply put, yesterday was a wonderful DAY!!!!!

And by the way, the episodes are wonderful, and I LOVE the special features!

Disappointed, So Far...

UNREAD_POSTby Guest » Sun Oct 30, 2005 8:33 pm

Sorry, folks. I watched the first DVD in the set and was put off by the "massive wigs" and Doris doing the "cutesy-poo," which got her into so much trouble with Day-haters.

I also think that her acting in the first season was very natural and quite wonderful. Here, in the second season, she is giving us "Do Not Disturb" and "Move Over Darling."!!!!!!!!!! I'm praying that the rest of this is not like the first DVD in this set. TOO MUCH BIG HAIR!!!!!!!

Doris looks gorgeous with all that hair and years younger with that long fall. She spiced up and her acting is fun and camp. This is what cult classics are made of.

Hair

UNREAD_POSTby Tom » Sun Oct 30, 2005 10:47 pm

Wait till you see her hair in season three. Piled on top of her head in a bubble knot.Doris must have tried to start a trend with that Do. It does look futuristic! Kinda far out and wild and cool.

Hats Off!

I dig Doris playing hop stocth and almost loseing her hat on the streets of San Fransisco. She did the hat thing a ar before Mary Tyler Moore came on the scene. Halloween everyday! Love it!

Hit Show

UNREAD_POSTby bettty » Mon Oct 31, 2005 2:48 am

CBS woud not have signed Doris to an iron clad contract if they did not think she would deliver a hit show, and deliver she did with her bouncey charm and fluffy wigs and made the Doris Day Show a top ten hit this second season. Many movie goers love Move Over Darling and Do Not Distrurb as I did and Doris showed real acting talent just showing up on the set despite some very hard knocks during this season, as the Manson Muders and her being accussed of having an affair with her tv producer loomed over her head. Like it or not this is the season that made the show a hit!

I have not seen season 2 yet but from what I have seen of season 3 - on video - Doris is very natural. She is certianly so in season one = I think that hit me the most - oh and her wonderful hair in season one - that is how I think Mrs Robinson would have looked if Doris had played the role - only sexed up a bit!

In season one "The fly boy" - Ray have you noticed when she enters in that amazing chocolate dress that all the background music is associated with her? A track from "What every girl should know", a track from "Latin for Lovers" and even "Hold me in your arms" - from Young at Heart.

I know i should be in season one but i have to say that the naturalness of Doris' acting in that first season leads me to regret even more that a really top notch dramatic part on the big screen did not come her way (or should I say, that she had agreed to do one)! One thing for sure, at the Golden Globes it was true to say "the best is yet to come" - there was alot more to give and I didn't really think about that until i watched some of the season one shows.

Music

UNREAD_POSTby ray » Mon Oct 31, 2005 11:55 am

Jas, Ken noticed the music on the DVD season two for epiosode selection has music from Doris's albums playing, very nice and soothing,

Hair was IN at that time and I wouldn't mind seeing Doris bald!LOL As long as she is on screen!! Seriously Doris was doing her own thing and many people in 1969 enjoyed her contributions which shot the show to number ten after being near thirty in season one.

Second Season Hair and Smiling!!!!

UNREAD_POSTby Ralph » Mon Oct 31, 2005 8:51 pm

Actually, the '70s was the era of "big hair." I don't think that Doris looked "natural" with all that long hair. She's not a "long haired woman!"

Doris Day's acting changed in the second season (judging on what I've seen in the first DVD of the set). In the first season, she was so wonderful! Here, in season two, she's "trying to be funny." The exact thing she wanted to avoid. She's giving you the worst of her performance in "Pillow Talk": the rolling eyes, etc.

There is a little too much smiling on Day's part here. She's always better when she's just herself (natural) and not trying to "please everyone." Her wide grins seemed to make some actors uncomfortable. For instance, Cary Grant (throughout "Touch...MInk" and Jimmy Stewart (the bus scene in "Man...Much".)

Facially and bodily, she looks incredible in the second season, but all that hair went overboard. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she cools it with the "head gear" in the next three DVDs!

Smile

natural?

UNREAD_POSTby Jas1 » Tue Nov 01, 2005 8:36 am

I think too I will like the second season (and on) more than the first. I have enjoyed the shows (what little I have seen) from season one but more for the fact it is Doris, the fact she looks fab, fab hair, and wonderful clothes etc than from the fact of the scripts or situations! The preview of Season 2 with Rose Marie looks great - I cannot wait to see it all.

I do not agree Doris was not a long haired person - in fact I would say most of her life she has worn long hair (longish bobs and so on). She looked fab (to me) in the 1940's with long hair, and again as Calamity, and again in Midnight Lace, Thrill of it All and Touch of Mink - and into the 1970's and even the longish bob she has worn much of the 1980's - 1990's. I adore her short hair the most around the Teacher's Pet period and how she had it cut circa 1987-88.

A Matter of Opinion

UNREAD_POSTby Ralph » Tue Nov 01, 2005 7:30 pm

Everybody has his/her opinion. I don't consider Doris Day's hair in Touch of Mink "long." When I say 'long hair,' I mean hanging down the back or longer than shoulder-length.

My favorite Doris Day hair is in "Glass Bottom" and "Caprice." I also loved it in "Young...Heart, "Pajama" and "Teacher's Pet."

Doris told them that in the second season, she wanted funny situations, not sight gags. When you have a funny situation, you play the scene straight, that's what makes it funny. Day, in most of her comedies (except for some of "Pillow," "Move...Darling," "Disturb"), Day played her comedy straight, as in "Thrill" and "Glass Bottom," even "Caprice." Take the latter when Day was in the tool shed. Day played that slapstick so realistically, you believed everything she did. I haven't seen that yet in Season Two. Perhaps later!

Well, got my Doris set yesterday (season two) and was happily viewing when the disc went wacko in the middle of episode 4. The disc has a dig in it that can't be fixed. Had to return it to Amazon. :-( I guess I'm destined to wait to enjoy the whole season.

I must say the extra features were a blast. Love the audio takes of the bumpers...(Hi, this is Doris Day....) How neat to hear the one that had to be 5 1/2 seconds...no more; no less. What were they thinking? Imagine trying to squeeze all those words into five seconds.

The outtakes were great to see, too. DAMN!

I prefer Doris with the shorter hair like in Young At Heart, Pajama Game, Glass Bottom Boat and Caprice too however I won't let the long hair distract me from the fun shows in Season 2.--My opinion.

Guest Trivia!

UNREAD_POSTby ray » Thu Nov 03, 2005 3:44 am

I love finding facts of Doris's supporting guests on her TV show. Anthony Eisley who palyed Alex Rhinehart in the episode The Woman Hater, was a regular on the TV series in the earlt 60's called Surfside Six with Trou Donahue as the star of that show.
In the Woman Hater episode Doris acts with hysterical results the overbearing type female that Mr. Rhinehart loathes! Doris rants on and on, chewing gum and even teasing her hair at the table where they are dining, All this so Mr. Rhinehart who took a shineing to Doris would not change his mind about women so there would be a book to publish for Today's World magazine. Doris was brassy and funny and was told by Mr. Rhinehart that she should win an Oscar for her performance!
We ALL agree with the Oscar for Doris, which is long overdue!!!!

Correction and Great News!

Anthony Eisley was on the TVshow The Hawaiian Eye not Surside Six. Robert Conrad, Troy Donahue and Connie Stevens were on both shows from Warner brothers TV.

And the exciting news from Stephen Mumms great site www.dorisdaytribute is that the first TV Special will be out on DVD in Late March or late Aptil. Finally ans we fans are estatic to say the least. The special is simple called The Doris Day Special with a nice photo from a TV guide interview around that time of the special. A big hair photo ( sorry Ralph LOL!) along with BIG talent. 2006 is going to be another banner year for DD DVD fans!! Now all we need is Storm Warning released!

She's Best When She's "Natural"

UNREAD_POSTby Ralph » Fri Nov 04, 2005 8:38 am

Doris Day, at her best, is a "natural" actress. Some directors, however, approached comedy from the idea that Day would do "funny things." When she later looked at herself on the screen, she cringed, and felt, "I wish I could go back and do it over again." This feeling can come years later when you sit and look at yourself. Ms. Day, herself, has said, "I don't look at myself (watch my movies), I see all the wrong things and turn it off..."

Directors like Michael Gordon, didn't take into consideration that over-doing the eye-rolling would wear thin with repeated viewings. What made Lucille Ball so great was that she played Lucy ("I Love Lucy") from a realistic standpoint. The situation was funny and she played it straight. Doris' best comedic performances came when she did exactly the same ("Thrill," "Caprice," "Daisies," "Lover," "Eggrole.") When she went out on a limb and tried to be funny, it came off as dishonest. Look what happened to Lucille with "The Lucy Show" and "Here's Lucy." Ball went completely in the opposite direction than "I Love Lucy." She and the great Vivian Vance got stuck in the "we've got to make this funny" mode and went berserk with unfunny, forced comedy. All of it was too broad...they overdid everything. Poor Gale Gordon became a blustering, overblown joke...good character actor gone bad.

Someone said they liked it when in the opening of the Doris Day Show, she hopped across the street! That's soooooo phony (40 year old women don't hop across the street!). I agree that Mary Tyler Moore stole the hat thing from Day in her opening and Valerie Harper then swiped it from Mary. The gesture was realistic - people do fight to keep their hats when a strong wind comes up!

On the first DVD of the second season, I found the hair as part of an outrageous attempt to make Doris look younger and "dressed up." Her more natural look and performance in the first season was more appealing to me.

I'm taking a vacation day today and will take a gander at the second DVD in this set. Will report later...

Billy Martin

UNREAD_POSTby Vicki M » Fri Nov 04, 2005 9:36 am

I just saw "Billy" on an ad for Bayer aspirin yesterday. He grew into quite a handsome man. He still has that cute grin. I have seen him in Lotrimin and Campell's soup ads - among others that I can't think of at this time. He also used to play a bartender on the soap "Loving."

Perhaps that is because Doris' and Mary's opening credit sequences were created by the same man - Remy Kramer. Abby Singer was also Production Manager of both shows.

Speaking of Wigs...

UNREAD_POSTby bettty » Sat Nov 05, 2005 8:46 pm

Just enjoyed the show from the second season where Doris has a date with a Movie Star and goes shopping with Myrna and tries on a curly wig and a long black one and they decide they like her hair as it is! The baseball scenes were funny and reminded me when Doris palyed baseball in her old Moonlight Bay movies. Who was the actor that palyed the Movie Star? Anyone know? Also watched the show where Myrna gets a swinging singles apartment and Doris and Buck and the boys with Nelson go about breaking the lease.

Second Disc

UNREAD_POSTby ray » Mon Nov 07, 2005 12:54 pm

Ralph waiting for your verdict on the second disc of the DD Shows. Be kind! Doris had to do what she had to do to make the show a hit, a show she really wasn't into anyway. But gave her all. I haven't watched the whole second disc but liked the Movie Star date and the Swinging Singles aparment show. Looking forward to the Christmas show which I remember fondly.

Is anyone experiencing playback problems on disc one episode 4 during the scene in which Doris receives the yellow roses?

I returned the first set I received for this problem, thinking it was the small scratch on the disc. A new set arrived today with no scratches or blemishes on the disc and yet the same problem is present.

I wrote to MPI. but haven't heard back as to whether or not it was an error is the pressing.

Bluebird,

So far I have watched the first DVD and half of the second one and have not experienced any problems.

Do you have another DVD player you can test it on? I notice that some DVDs that don't play as well on my one DVD player will play fine on the other one. One is a Region Free player; the other is set for Region 1. It probably shouldn't matter which player you use, but it sometimes seems to.
