Introduction

The Definitive Doris Day Discography attempts to present for both fans and collectors the totality of known songs recorded or sung by Doris Day. The discography will not discuss details of Miss Day's personal life. The discography will discuss specific events in Miss Day's life but only to provide a time line on her recording activities. There are many other sources where the public can discover details on her life and career. Also this discography does not provide specifics on composers, musical backing on her recordings, or disc identification data with the exception of the basic catalog number of the specific record or album. However, data is provided to identify lesser known special or rare recordings. Specifics on Miss Day's recordings are readily available through other sources, especially those inherent in The Bear Family Records of Germany Boxed Sets.

This discography will provide specifics on the number of commercial recordings by Doris Day while with Les Brown and Columbia Records; and also the non-commercial recordings available through World Program Service, Capital Transcriptions, Standard Program Library, Armed Forces Radio Service, other transcription services and V-Discs. The discography will also discuss Doris Day songs from her appearance on radio, films and television. The discography will attempt to correct erroneous data about the number of tracks Miss Day recorded during her numerous musical activities. For example, there are current compilations which purport to contain the complete recordings of Doris Day with Les Brown. There were only 40 commercial songs recorded by Miss Day with Les Brown, not 42. The songs "Are You Still In Love With Me?" and "It Could Happen To You" were non-commercial tracks from transcribed One Night Stands. There are about 80 of such non-commercial tracks with the Les Brown Orchestra.

By design, this discography begins with Miss Day's association with Les Brown and His Orchestra, although this is not the beginning of her recordings activities. Her first known recordings were with Barney Rapp and His New Englanders in 1939, which are covered in Chapter III - The Radio Years (1939-1953). Even before her association with Barney Rapp, Miss Day sang on Cincinnati, Ohio radio stations. It was through her singing on amateur and other radio shows that Miss Day caught Barney Rapp's attention. After singing with Barney Rapp, Miss Day sang with Bob Crosby and his Bobcats in 1940 during a 3 month period. Afterward she sang with Les Brown and His Orchestra. Miss Day was with Les Brown during two distinct periods--August 1940 through mid 1941, and 1943 through 1946.

Chapter I. The Les Brown Years (1940-1946)

Doris Day joined Les Brown and His Orchestra in August 1940. Three months later Doris Day cut her first commercial recording with Les Brown on the Okeh label (a subsidiary of Columbia Records). The first of these recordings were cut on 29 November 1940 and the last were cut on 8 April 1941. In all there were only nine records containing 15 songs. These were released as 10" vinyl discs and were recorded to play at 78 revolutions per minute (rpm).

During this initial collaboration, Doris Day and Les Brown Orchestra were featured on radio broadcasts from New York and Chicago. The New York engagement originated from the Glen Island casino in New Rochelle, New York on 25 October 1940, and from Mike Todd's Theatre Cafe in Chicago on 19 March 1941. Details on these two engagements are covered in Chapter II - The Les Brown Years - Non-Commercial Recordings (1940-1946) of this discography.

B. The Soundies. There are also three known "soundies" featuring Doris Day with the Les Brown Orchestra. Soundies were the precursors to today's videos. Soundies were produced between 1941 and 1946. These soundies were 3-minute 16mm sound films in black and white, which were rear projected unto the screen of a machine called a Panoram. The juke box type coin-operated machines were situated in diners, nightclubs, bars and other public places. The three known soundies of Les Brown Orchestra and Doris Day are as follows:

My Lost Horizon (7 Apr 1941)
Once Over, Lightly (13 Apr 1941)
Is It Love Or Is It Conscription? (21 Apr 1941)

Sometime in mid-1941, Miss Day left the Les Brown Orchestra. During this time Miss Day got married, and gave birth to her son, Terry Melcher, and was soon divorced. In 1942 she auditioned at WLW in Cincinnati, and became a staff vocalist. After hearing Miss Day on radio, Les Brown approached her, and to our good fortunes, she rejoined the Les Brown Orchestra in 1943. More details on this time period are covered in Chapter III- The Radio Years (1939-1953).

After rejoining, Les Brown and his Orchestra, Doris Day recorded in the Spring of 1944 several songs on 16" vinyl radio transcriptions for World Transcription Service. These transcriptions contained song tracks, which were not available in other recorded formats. Some of these songs appear repeatedly on radio broadcasts billed as One Night Stands, Spotlight Bands or Magic Carpet. However, there are some gems that were available only through the 16" transcriptions up until about 30 years later when Joyce, Sandy Hook, and Hindsight Records released Long Play (LP) albums containing some of these songs. Also in 2003 Varese Sarabande released a collection of 17 rare non-commercial tracks. Details on the Doris Day songs featured in the 16" radio transcriptions are covered in Chapter II of this discography.

Doris Day returned to cutting commercial records (10" singles) with Les Brown and his Band of Renown with the great hit "Sentimental Journey," which was recorded on the Columbia Red Label on 20 November 1944, and released in January 1945. In all Doris Day recorded 24 songs with Les Brown for Columbia on 15 red label 78 rpm 10" discs, and 1 LP album (also in extended play (EP)) album.

Chapter III. The Radio Years (1939-1953)

Doris Day continued to showcase her vocal talents through other entertainment media even before she left Les Brown and His Band of Renown in September 1946. Her popularity propelled her into radio programs, such as The Jack Kirkwood Show (CBS), The Sweeney & March Radio Show (CBS), Rudy Vallee Show (NBC); Your Hit Parade (NBC), The Bob Hope Show (NBC), kraft Music Hall (NBC), The Railroad Hour (ABC), and The Doris Day Show (CBS). Miss Day also appeared on other radio shows such as the March of Dimes, Buddy Clark Melody Hour, and those transcribed by the Armed Forces Radio Service. Also Doris Day recorded song tracks for the transcription services provided by Standard Program Library, Capital Transcriptions, and World Program Service.

Although It was radio that first brought Doris Day to our attention, singing was not Miss Day's initial interest. She was a good dancer, teamed with her dancing partner, Jerry Doherty, and won a grand prize in a city-wide amateur contest. With the prize money the dancing team and their mothers went to Hollywood. About a month later they returned to Cincinnati. The plan was to say their goodbyes and return to Hollywood. But on the eventful evening of Friday, 13 October 1937, Miss Day and her friends were involved in a terrible auto accident involving a locomotive. A shattered leg mended slowly. Miss Day on radio interviews said her recuperation took 14 months. While recuperating, Miss Day became interested in singing, which she indicated took about 8 months of voice coaching. During this time Miss Grace Raine became her vocal coach and imparted the knowledge and technique which would later mold Miss Day's singing style. Her singing talents were initially showcased at WCPO in Cincinnati where she sang on a weekend amateur show. Through the assistance of Miss Grace Raine, Miss Day was hired for a radio program called "Carlin's Carnival." Miss Day sang regularly but without pay. Her newly developed singing style and her formative radio experience lead Miss Day to audition in 1939 for Barney Rapp. Barney Rapp owned a supper club, The Sign Of The Drum, and conducted Barney Rapp and his New Englanders. It was Barney Rapp who suggested Doris Kappelhoff change her name to Doris Day, because of her rendition of "Day After Day," which she sang regularly on "Carlin's Carnival." Through Miss Day's association with Barney Rapp came the opportunity for national exposure. On 17 June 1939 a radio program originated from the supper club. The show was coproduced by NBC and was broadcast through WLW Radio in Cincinnati. This was the first coast to coast broadcast of Barney Rapp and His New Englanders, and of course Miss Doris Day. The broadcast featured two Doris Day tracks. These are perhaps the first Doris Day recordings. After singing with Barney Rapp, Miss Day sang with Bob Crosby and His Bobcats in 1940 during a 3 month period. Afterward she sang with Les Brown and His Orchestra. Miss Day was with Les Brown during two distinct periods, August 1940 through mid 1941, and 1943 through 1946.

Between these two periods Miss Day returned to WLW in Cincinnati where she auditioned in 1942 and joined WLW as a staff vocalist. Miss Day sang on The Lion Roar, WLW on Parade, and Moon River. It was during this time that Les Brown heard her on radio and persuaded her in 1943 to return to his orchestra.

This portion of The Definitive Doris Day Discography covers Miss Day's initial radio recordings, and eventually leads to the final radio recordings appropriately incorporated on The Doris Day Show. By design, this portion of the discography follows The Les Brown Years mainly because her singing with Les Brown comprise the bulk of her early recordings.

Chapter IV. The Columbia Records Solo Years (1947-1967)

Doris Day began her solo recordings in early 1947. Miss Day recorded mainly for Columbia Records, although she cut non-commercial transcriptions for Standard Program Library, Capitol Records, and Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS.) Most of her early recordings were issued on the Columbia Red Label as 78's, 45's and 33 1/3 rpm singles. In 1949 Miss Day cut her first Columbia album, a 10" LP titled "You're My Thrill." Miss Day continued recording both singles and albums until 1967.

The joy of collecting Miss Day's singles and albums was further augmented by Bear Family Records of Germany. Bear Family Records issued between 1992 and 1997 a total of four boxed CD collections which included every song Miss Day recorded for Columbia Records. To top such a feat, Bear Family Records discovered and included in the various boxed sets previously unknown tracks and different versions of known Doris Day songs. See Chapter IX - The Bear Family Records of Germany Boxed Sets (1992-1997).

This section of the discography includes all the known commercial Doris Day songs in single and album format. It also includes in chronological order non-commercial tracks which were made for use in radio shows and other musical venues. These include transcriptions for Standard Program Library, Capitol Records, AFRS, Victory Discs (V-Discs), and other transcription formats.

B. The Doris Day Columbia Label Albums.

Note: LP's included in this section are those which contain original tracks found only in that particular album. There were many Columbia compilations which included hits of the period or grouped Doris Day hit single from her movies, such as CL 749--Day In Hollywood. These songs had been released earlier as single or in the album from the motion picture. The number in parenthesis after the album title represent the total songs considered an original Day version. These LP's were also released as Boxed Sets, either with 78 rpm discs or with 45 rpm discs. As shown below, the catalog number for the 78 rpm discs consist of a five digit number, while the 45 rpm discs are preceded by "4-". Any collector who obtains the original LP has no need to acquire either the 78 or 45 rpm boxed sets since the song tracks are identical to those contained in the LP.

C. The Doris Day Columbia Extended Play Albums.

The Extended Play (EP) Album usually consisted of a 7" vinyl disc which contained 2 songs per side. The EP was designed to play at 45 rpm. For the most part the EP was an offshoot of the 10" and 12" LP, but there are those rare EP's w-hich contain song tracks found only on this type disc (i.e. "April In Paris," and the UK
EP SEG-7546. The EP's differ from the boxed sets. The boxed sets were rather cumbersome especially those vinyl discs which played at 78 rpm. You will note the record numbers for the boxed sets are shown under the particular 10" or 12" LP above from which they were derived.

F. Columbia Records LP Reissues. Columbia Records repackaged previously released Doris Day tracks under the banner Collector's Series. These reissues were usually 12 inch LP's. More recently many of Doris Day's original recordings have been reissued in audit Compact Disc (CD) format. These are not detailed in this section, but are contained elsewhere in this discography if the CD's contain previously unreleased Doris Day tracks.

G. Columbia Records Special Products. Columbia Records issued a variety of LP's which consisted of compilations of previously issued Doris Day tracks. These products were specialty items for commercial businesses , such as Goodyear and Zenith. There is noting of interest to the Doris Day collector except for the photos and artwork of the LP liners. These items have recently become available through Ebay and other sources, and the sellers ask more than their worth, especially since the contents are previously issued tracks, and at times the LP's were given away.

The correct title of that song is "Wonder." Audio HCD226 is the only source of which I am aware that include the songs "Slow Poke" and "Please Mr. Sun", and therefore is a must in any Doris Day collection.

The following albums are included in the discography because they continually appear for sale on Ebay, and collectors and fans should be aware of their existence. These albums are apparently privately produced recordings which are nothing more than the soundtrack from Doris Day films. The albums offer nothing special for the Doris Day fan. For good measure a previously released Columbia track is sometimes included at the end of the film soundtrack as filler. Other albums contain tracks from radio transcriptions. Some of the albums contain other film soundtracks and those are shown in parenthesis.

B. Non-Commercial Recording Sessions.

The Doris Day & Frank Sinatra Raw Sessions. In 1954 a collection of out takes emerged from the motion picture "Young At Heart." A CD was actually produced by Naughty Dog and made available for free trade and was not for sale. The CD was titled Frank Sinatra & Doris Day Young At Heart Raw Sessions, and contained the following four new Doris Day song tracks:

Track 01 Hold Me In Your Arms - Raw session (Doris Day) 5:51
Track 02 Ready, Willing and Able - Raw session (Doris Day) 2:52
Track 03 You, My Love - Raw session (Doris Day and Frank Sinatra) 8:22
Track 04 You, My Love 2 - Raw session (Doris Day and Frank Sinatra) 2:16
Track 05 Hold Me In Your Arms - Raw session (Warner Bros. Studio Choir) 1:42
Track 06 Someone To Watch Over Me - Raw session (Frank Sinatra) 2:54

Other Rare Songs From Rehearsal And Motion Picture Studio Recording Sessions. A true gem emerged from a rehearsal session in preparation for the record album "Annie Get Your Gun." I do not know the origins of this recording, but am thankful it exists. The song "I Got Lost In His Arms" with a simple piano accompaniment has woven itself into the realm of a true Doris Day song rarity. In my opinion it is comparable to the track "Never Look Back" contained in CD 5 of the Bear Family Boxed Set "Secret Love" Doris Day 1951-1955. With very simple backing Miss Day gives us a totally different rendition of "Never Look Back" than that released commercially. Some of the lyrics are so different they seem foreign to the mood captured in the track with which we are familiar.

Aside from "Never Look Back", other recordings from "Love Me Or Leave Me" were made at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures. These recordings were made at MGM in December 1954, whereas the Columbia Record tracks were recorded in November 1954 and January/February 1955. The MGM 12" vinyl discs were recorded at 78 rpm and are as follows:

Disc No. 29256 Scene 2401 "You Made Me Love You" 20 December 1954
Disc No. 29257 Scene 2402 "Stay On The Right Side Of The Road" 20 December 1954
Disc No. 29258 Scene 2403 "Mean To Me" 20 December 1954
Disc No. 29259 Scene 2404 "Everybody Loves My Baby" 20 December 1954
Disc No. 29260 Scene 2405 "Sam The Old Accordion Man" 21 December 1954
Disc No. 29261 Scene 2406 "Never Look Back" 21 December 1954
Disc No. 29262 Scene 2409 "Love Me Or Leave Me" 21 December 1954
Disc No. 29263 Scene 2410 "Love Me Or Leave Me" (alternate) 21 December 1954
Disc No. 29265 Scene 2414 "Eddie Fulton Jingle" 20 December 1954
Disc No. 29267 Scene 2407 "It All Depends On You" 21 December 1954
Disc No. 29268 Scene 2408 "I'll Never Stop Loving You" 21 December 1954
Disc No. 29264 Scene 2413 "At Sundown" 20 December 1954
Disc No. 29266 Scene 2412 "Montage And Ten Cents A Dance" 20 December 1954

These MGM recordings sound much like the tracks in the "Love Me Or Leave Me" Columbia soundtrack album, but there are subtle differences in the phrasing and orchestration which leads me to believe these are different versions. This is especially true on the last listed tract (Montage) which contains the song "Sunday" which was not included in the motion picture soundtrack.

Chapter VII. The Soundtrack Songs From Doris Day Films (1948-1968)

Doris Day made her film debut in the film "Romance On the High Seas," thus extending the initial talent that brought her fame--a voice of liquid gold. Most of her Warner Brothers films were musicals and gave us some great songs and hits. Early on Warner Brothers and Columbia Records discovered that her soundtrack songs sold the film and also sold her records. Hand in hand the collaboration gave us some of her best singing material. In most instances the songs as performed in the films were different than those released commercially. This augments the number of different tracks Miss Day sang. This portion of the discography will present the songs featured in the various Doris Day films. Oddly enough even the songs featured in the film trailers were sometimes different than those in the film soundtrack.

Chapter VIII. The Television Years (1968 - 1986)

Doris Day made her first live television appearance on "What's My Line" in 1954. There were other television appearances on such shows as Merv Griffin Show and Johnny Carson, but they were quite rare. She was prompted to sing many times, but she always declined saying she was not prepared. This occurred on her appearances in 1974 when promoting the best selling biography "Doris Day'-Her Own Story" by H. E. Hotchner. But to our good fortunes when she appeared on the Mike Wallace Show, Wallace asked her to sing at the conclusion of the interview. Again Miss Day politely said no, but Mike Wallace started singing "Sentimental Journey", the orchestra followed and so did Doris Day. Between both they sang the entire song. Miss Day was terrific, prepared or unprepared.

Miss Day was a presenter at the televised Academy Wards on three different occasions, as follows:

30th Annual Academy Awards on 26 March 1958
31st Annual Academy Awards on 6 April 1959
32nd Annual Academy Awards on 4 April 1960

But earlier at the 21st Annual Academy Awards on 24 April 1949 she sang live her hit "It's Magic."

After Miss Day's contract with Columbia Records ended, she embarked on her television series "The Doris Day Show", which ran from 1968 through 1973. Miss Day sang excerpts of many known songs. Also to the delight of her many fans, Miss Day appeared on three television specials--The Doris Day Mary Anne Kappelhoff Special (1971), The John Denver Special (1974) and Doris Day toDay (1975). Miss Day also appeared on Doris Day's Best Friends (1985-1986) for the Christian Broadcast Network. The television specials provided many interpretations of known Doris Day songs as well as other contemporary and older songs. Her series "Doris Day's Best Friends" was quite a different story when it came to the songs she sang. There were original songs, and contemporary songs, which have become legendary due to their unavailability on a commercial recording.

A. The Doris Day Show. Throughout the series Doris delighted us with her singing. Of course, the opening credits featured her signature song "Whatever Will Be, Will Be." There appear to be three different versions of "Whatever Will Be, Will Be" during the show's 5 year period. And sprinkled in several episodes were the following:

Season One (1968) Whatever Will Be, Will Be

B. The Doris Day Mary Anne Kappelhoff Special (1971). This was the first of two television specials produced for Doris Day. The show was highly entertaining and provided new songs and other interpretations of Miss Day's hits. The digital video disc (DVD) was especially interesting since there were also "out takes" of various scenes and production numbers. Details of the Doris Day songs are as follows. We are familiar with most of the songs, and the Doris Day songs we know are entirely new versions.

The Doris Day Mary Anne Secret Love/Wonderful Feelin'/Feelin'

Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars/Summertime If I Had My Life To Live Over/Let Me Call

C. The John Denver Show. Under reciprocal agreements, Doris Day appeared on The John Denver Show to compensate for Mr. Denver's appearance on Doris's Special "Doris day toDay." There was good chemistry between Miss Day and John Denver and it showed in their performances. The three familiar songs they performed were replete with new lyrics to fit the comedic situation presented in the skits.

On Moonlight Bay
I'll See You In My Dreams

D. Doris day toDay. The second and last television special features Doris Day with guest stars John Denver, Rich Little, and Tim Conway. The show was fast paced, full of great singing and terrific production numbers. Especially noteworthy is the Day/Little pairing featuring Doris Day movie posters and songs from the respective movies. The sigments with Doris Day and John Denver were very entertaining and provided some great singing by both artists. The "Sunshine Medley" is noteworthy.

E. Doris Day's Best Friends. The Christian Broadcast Network (CBN) was instrumental in persuading Doris Day to return to the small screen in 1984. The CBN series ran 26 shows which featured many of Miss Day's friends including Rock Hudson, Les Brown, Denver Pyle, Howard Keel, Kaye Ballard, Angie Dickenson, Robert Wagner, Tony Randall, Loni Anderson, Jill St. John, Tony Bennett, Leslie Nielsen, "Biggest" and many others. During the course of many of the shows Miss Day sang new songs recorded specially for the series. The songs were sung overlapping the different situations in the particular show. There is the theme song "Best Friends," a lip syncing of the original 1945 "Sentimental Journey' in the Les Brown segment, and contemporary songs which by now have attained a mystical status since the recordings have not officially been released. There is particularly interesting scene when Doris while driving her vehicle sings a few bars of "Whatever Will Be, Will Be." The first show of the series featured Rock Hudson. There were two versions of the song tracks for this particular show. In the first version Miss Day sang "My Buddy," and in the other "Crocodile Rock." There are 16 new songs in the series, as follows.

Doris Day's Best Friends (CBN) Best Friends (theme song)
1984-1985 My Buddy (Episode 1)
Crocodile Rock (Episode 1)

Chapter IX. The Bear Family Records of Germany Boxed Sets (1992-1997).

Bear Family Records issued between 1992 and 1997 a total of four CD collections which included every song Miss Day recorded as a solo artist for Columbia Records. Each of the four boxed sets contains in chronological order each recorded track and the copyright dates of each recording. Each boxed sets houses individual CD's and and a hard bound book replete with photos of Miss Day, movie posters, and vinyl records. There is a narrative describing Miss Day's motion picture and recording activities during the period covered in each boxed set. But most significant is the "Discography" section contained in each book. This section provides details on the recording studios, the dates of the recordings, the song tracks in question, the song composers and best of all the tracking numbers used by Columbia Records for each song track. The following does not enumerate the song tracks, but the statistics of each track broken down as a commercial release or a previously unknown track or different versions of known Doris Day songs. For the unreleased tracks, the title of the song is identified. This is an important statistic since it identifies previously unknown tracks These boxed sets are a must have in any Doris Day records collection. It is almost impossible today to find each of these recordings in "singles" format. The LP albums are available, but at hefty prices when in mint or near mint condition.
