An earlier post asked about who wrote the song Caprice that Doris sang in the film of the same name. The lyrics were written by Larry Marks and released on November 4 - 1966 LarryMarks was born in Los Angeleson October 3 - 1939. He was a songwriter, executivewho worked for Columbia, A&M Recordsand ...

I'm with Howard. DND is where things took a negative turn. Her films became mostly about feeding the Rosenthal money machine. So instead of Marty finding challenging roles that would have stretched her as an actress, he settled for second rate, formulaic drivel like DND. This film was beneath her. T...

Me too, Howard, but I think you meant Don Knotts, right? I think the MOD supporting cast was better than what I've seen in the rough footage they assembled of SGTG, especially Don Knotts over Wally Cox. The department store scene with Doris and Knotts is funnier than the one with Marilyn and Wally. ...

I remember MOD getting a huge promotional push from 20th Century Fox and it was touted in the press as the big Christmas film of the year. Given its tragic history with Marilyn, Dean and Cyd originally cast in the leading roles and then resurrected a year later with the number one box-office star ta...

SMNF is the least of the Rock, Doris, Tony films to me. I prefer Doris and Rock in an upscale, urban setting with sharp dialog that makes the most of their impeccable comedic timing and pits them against each other in the proverbial battle of the sexes. Likewise, I prefer Doris playing an independen...

Doris nailed that character in the very first scene. Her getting dressed with the kids misbehaving is classic. She made it look easy and effortless. After that days' shooting, she wrote a note to director Chuck Walters expressing how much she enjoyed the experience. The rest was a cakewalk. Another ...

Tunnel Of Love remains a head scratcher to me. I never understood why the film appealed to Doris or Marty. A flimsy and embarrassing premise with few genuine laughs and little else to recommend it. A talented cast completely wasted on inferior material. At least she found a much better script with I...

Peter, I spent an hour or so this morning perusing the many rare and fascinating items from your Doris collection. You must have amazing organizational skills to keep track of all the items. Your photographic displays are very impressive. Really love the costume sketches by Ray Aghayan and Helen Ros...

I am saddened to report the passing of former forum member Ray Lyons on July 2nd. Ray danced with Doris at a benefit for the animals in Carmel in 1993. He also attended a "meet and greet" with her and other fans in Carmel in 1989. Ray was an ardent, lifelong Doris fan. May he rest in peace. Michael

How interesting - Brando being up for Pajama Game and Where Were You When The Lights Went Out - I never heard this before. I wish they had connected early in his career, before he went off the rails and became a caricature. I could see Doris in the Eva Marie Saint role in On The Waterfront, or as St...

Hi Peter, These photos are so interesting and new to me. I recall Doris' comments in the book by David Kaufman on Last Tango in Paris. "After attending a benefit screening together on March 15-1973, Day and Billy De Wolfe visited Kaye Ballard, who asked what they thought of the film. "Well, diarrhe...

"Critic Michael F Keaney similarly notes that the film lacks realism due to its excision of racism in the narrative, as well as its' characters do not speak with a southern accent but concludes that , "despite these shortcomings , the tightly woven script and solid acting make this an enjoyable film...

I too appreciate the many rare and lovely photos that Peter so generously posts here.

Thank you so much.
Michael

Perhaps the best thing about Storm Warning was Hitchcock viewing it and hiring Doris to star in TMWKTM a few years later. Props to Curtiz and WB for seeing her potential in dramatic roles.

Michael

I agree with Howard - these are all great choices. Nicely done, Johnny.

Michael

I suppose this could still happen but the likelihood decreases with each passing year as Cuoco is in demand for series and films on streaming platforms. It's not uncommon for projects to be announced and never make it past the development phase. No screenwriter has been announced to my knowledge. No...

Stone Pine appears on the credit scroll at the end of each episode. I think most of the interviews she did were shot there. They also filmed at several locations around Carmel and Monterey. The Loni Anderson ep was shot entirely at the Monterey harbor because they went on a whale watching expedition...

Best Friends was shot at Stone Pine Estate, which is several miles east of Doris' home in Carmel Valley. Stone Pine doubled as her home on the show, although some of the footage of her walking with Rock was shot at her home.

Michael

Wow! The photos from DD's Best Friends are beautiful and high quality. The shot of Doris on the phone is gorgeous and I love the on-set photos when they were filming w/ Rock. Well done, Peter.

Michael

Somehow, I never think of Doris doing a lot of print ads and yet the photo above disproves that. Now that I think of it, Marty did sign her to promote several products over the years including shampoos and kitchen renovations. I wonder how she felt about that.

Michael

Johnny, Not sure about the decisions regarding Doris' screen time. Once the Bacall and Douglas characters became romantically involved, the focus shifted to their tortured relationship and his eventual downfall. This had more to do with the storyline than Doris, I would think. I agree with the NYT c...

Johnny, I caught Joni performing on YT the day after the Grammys aired. I favor viewing highlights on YT vs. sitting through a 3 hour telecast. Joni was magical. Always great to see the talented, supportive Brandi Carlisle by her side too. Another magical moment - Tracy Chapman re-emerging after man...

As fans, we always want more Doris and that is not the case here. Hers is decidedly a supporting role and she disappears midway through and doesn't return until the final few minutes. Still, this film is a marvel of crisp black and white camerawork, evocative set design, and atmospheric mood. Direct...

Peter, The video of Doris performing at the 1949 Oscars is pure gold. It was almost impossible to find online for many years. In 2017, another forum member and good friend, Howard Green, arranged for me to view it at an Academy building in downtown LA. We were escorted to a private viewing room by a...

Honestly, that gown from the 1959 Oscars is not one of my favorites. But Doris looks lovely and happy as she was in the midst of filming Pillow Talk at the time. So her glow is real and one of her most popular films was only a few months from release. Love the informal photo with her dog. I'm guessi...
