Doris' Favorite Species of Dogs & Cats ?

I was always interested to know -- does anyone know in particular Doris' favorite species of dogs and cats ? Naturally she is a great fan of animals in general but she might have a special type of dog or cat in which she is partial. Does anyone know if she likes horses ? I hope for her sake that is ...

Re: EDDIE FISHER PASSED AWAY...TRIBUTE

I was sorry to hear the news. Another singing star from the 50's is now gone.
A shame that his personal life had to overshadow the singing accomplishments.

Re: Patrice Wymore

I never did hear back from Mrs. Wymore Flynn. I gather that she is not keen on Fan Mail or has probably heard it all before or is very busy running the FLYNN ranch in Jamaica.
At any rate, I am still glad that I wrote to her.

Re: Quick Question Department

Sorry, should make clear, my last post (above) meant Jane 'Russell' - not Powell (as much as I admire Miss Powell's talent, I am not generally a fan of light operetta and certainly not of such singers covering standards/ jazz songs). No problem - Jas ! That's what happens when we're discussing thos...

Re: Quick Question Department

Sadly, I read a few years ago that Jane Powell can no longer sing - she lost her voice ! In an interview, she claimed that she never developed the proper vocal technique that could keep her voice secure and eventually she had to stop singing ! She did find work as an actress and I think she has appe...

Re: Quick Question Department

I have also read that Lauren Bacall was offered the part in Love me or Leave me and Jane Russell too (in her book) states she was offered it. Doris was by far the best - for many reasons, not least of all, vocally. Thanks for the info - Jas ! I did not know about Lauren Bacall. Good thing she did n...

Re: Quick Question Department

From what I read in an interview with Jane Powell in a magazine a few years ago--she was grateful for being given the opportunity to test for the role of RUTH ETTING but ultimately could not see herself in the role. If I am not mistaken---Doris landed the role via a very strong and enthusiastic reco...

Re: Quick Question Department

Jane Powell was actually considered for the role of RUTH ETTING in LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME. Good thing she did not get though as it would have been a total miscast. Her voice was better suited to classical and operetta material as opposed to popular songs. Jane Powell was yet another one of those wonder...

Re: Equally Sad DIAHANN CARROLL Singing Appearance !

Doris can most definitely sing today - if she had wished. She probably became quite frustrated with the recording industry. Columbia Records which had been her main recording venue for years apparently was unwilling to promote her later efforts. Then came her TV series and TV specials plus she start...

Equally Sad DIAHANN CARROLL Singing Appearance !

Has anyone caught the recent PBS TV special of Diahann Carroll ? Again - very sad ! She can no longer sing very well either. This month both Diahann and Connie Francis were on TV and their singing days are clearly over ! It had been several years since I last heard them both sing. Therefore, I do th...

Re: Banners, spanners and manners: open topic

Bob Cummings was also very popular on Television----long before Doris -- he had (I think) 2 highly successful TV sitcoms so definitely a very familiar face and presence in many an American home. This of course is all going way back so I don't think his Television work was as well-known overseas. Alt...

Re: Doris' hair-do

Thanks for the info. I now recall that hairstyle----it was short and rather flat. I wonder how Gertrude Wheeler arrived at that particular style. James Cagney-----now that's yet another major name that has slipped from the USA public conscious. I do think as the years pass-----many of these people a...

Re: Banners, spanners and manners: open topic

Methinks that Bob Cummings was a major US Television star around the time of LUCKY ME. He also appeared in numerous movies so I gather the studio was destined to eventually put him in a picture with Doris. He is rather forgotten nowadays but for many years he was quite a common figure on Television ...

I'm truly amazed ! I very much liked her work in the movies HOLLYWOOD CANTEEN & SILK STOCKINGS in addition to the ones she made with Doris and others. I wonder if anyone in this forum residing in California will go and catch Janis' act. So I guess we can add her list to those from that era still act...

Re: Janis Paige To Perform Again

Janis Paige will appear at the Hotel Nikko's "Rrazz" room in San Francisco later this month. Wow, it is amazing that she is still performing in front of live audiences. I wonder if Doris will drive up from Carmel to see her. Highly doubtful, but it would be wonderful if she surprised her old friend...

For later Julie Andrews (and wonderfully) - check out the soundtrack for 'Victor/Victoria' - a wonderful film that I think Doris would have been fabulous in (Julie was amazing too). Re: Doris' co-players

Bill (Billy) Gray has had quite a story. I believe he does have his own website. He played the son on FATHER KNOWS BEST but for him it was a not a happy experience. He feels strongly that the show was unrealistic---that too many viewers believed it---and that this led to many problems within the US ...

Re: Do you think Doris Still Sings?

I think her singing days were largely discouraged by the fact that Columbia Records was no longer interested in promoting her recordings. Music - for the worse - was moving in a far different direction. Her son Terry wanted her to become more contemporary in her singing-----i.e. to do more rock-----...

Re: Julie Andrews

Actually I thought that DORIS would have been far more suitable to star in the movie version of HELLO DOLLY as opposed to SOUND OF MUSIC as the role of Maria although nice would not have offered Doris many acting possibilities. As DOLLY - she would have been able to combine her unique comedic talent...
