Re: Banners, spanners and manners: open topic
I hope, Dorine, that, as I do, you'll love "Lucky Me" - the opening alone is worth the price of admission, as they say. It's definitely Hollywood musical nonsense but that was how they made them at the time and Doris and the rest of the cast are great - plus it was the first musical made in CinemaS...

Re: Banners, spanners and manners: open topic
Thank You ! :) Hoping matters improve for us all ! In answer to your question(s) - I was born 'too late' for the Doris era - and the epoch of movie musicals as well :( I was first 'introduced' (if that is the right term to use !) to Doris quite late in her movie career - it was THE GLASS BOTTOM BOAT...

Hello ! This is truly a wonderful website and forum. I sure wish I could get to know people here a bit better. I see the visitors hail from quite a distance from myself. Interesting that there are gatherings on the topic of Doris taking place in the UK. Here in the US where I live there is no such t...

Re: Can A Truly Excellent Book on DD Be Written ?
I'm glad you included "I'll See You In My Dreams," Jas. I think it's an underrated gem! Love it! And TCM, I agree about "My Dream is Yours," another favorite of mine - I think I like it better than "Romance on the High Seas." That number Doris does with her little boy at bedtime ... have you ever s...

Re: New Doris Day Websites!
I noticed that the new CD is scheduled for definite release in the UK, but is "still in negotiations" for the US. Does anyone know any more about this....? I certainly hope it will be released here!!! That's a bit odd, isn't it - there must enough US fans to release it in the USA, surely? It's a mu...

I thought she was very much mismatched with Frank Sinatra. There did seem to be a wall around Frank - a wary one - where he was telling her to 'stay out' !

I agree with your choices ! I also thought LULLABY OF BROADWAY was quite good---a film in which Doris was able to dance up a storm and the supporting cast was quite good. STARLIFT is a film that's been growing on me. Though Doris' role there - as herself - was quite small (I wish they would have bui...

I thought Gene Nelson was superb too. He presented an award with Cyd Charisse at the 1989 Golden Globes that Doris attended. Wonder if the cought up after all the years: hope so! I wonder so much about that trip - so many unanswered questions - wonder if Doris stayed in an Hotel or at the house on ...

Re: what is your favorite season of the show ?
Hands down for me it would have to be SEASON # 1 ! As the series progressed I became far less interested. The show became too talky and this constant striving to update the characters eventually left me rather cold. Season # 1 had its own special charm that was missing completely by Season # 5. Towa...

Re: Can A Truly Excellent Book on DD Be Written ?
Let's face it - when it came to movie musicals - few studios could hold a candle to MGM. WB made some musicals before DD-------Yankee Doodle Dandy, Hollywood Canteen---spring to mind but the bulk of the truly great ones came from MGM. 20 th Century Fox was fortunate to have Betty Grable, Alice Faye,...

Re: Lullaby of Broadway
Very charming film !
Excellent supporting cast !
Nelson, Gladys George, Florence Rice, Sakall, De Wolfe, etc ! Excellent in every way !
I also liked the gal who played DeWolfe's colleague and friend - she sang quite well and had a nice screen presence.
DD was in fine company for this film !

Sorry for neglecting to mention BING. I have a friend - Mike Kaptanis - who is a great Bing enthusiast. Thanks !
No doubt there was much competition for dancers during that era. Astaire & Kelly were of course the 'biggies' but there were others - George Murphy, Donald O'Connor, Dan Dailey, Buddy Ebsen - come immediately to mind.

Dancer Gene Nelson
Been watching some films with dancer Gene Nelson. I never realized how good and underrated a dancer he was ! He worked very well with DD and with Virginia Mayo and also Janice Rule in their dance sequences for STARLIFT. Obviously he came into musicals when such films were gradually being phased out ...

Re: IF IM LUCKY - Perry Como Movie !
I too enjoyed Perry Como - talk about an illustrious career ... his hit records spanned the decades - how many? Three, four? He certainly had longevity! It saddens me to hear today's so-called music authorities, when they speak of today's music, compare it to the "bland" pop before the rock revolut...

I met Kitty Carlisle Hart. She was 94 at the time and was 'guest of honor' at a program - 'An Afternoon With Kitty Carlisle Hart' where she was interviewed and talked about her career. I went up and spoke with her and got her autograph. My Dad met Jack Palance at a social function in PA and as a lad...

Re: The DD 'Image' !
She was very tired indeed. Since 1948 she had been going practically 'non-stop' with her movie career. Year in and year out - for 20 years-----one project would end and then she would have to go on to yet another. Not even knowing if it would be successful or not---though she did have a good inkling...

Re: Can A Truly Excellent Book on DD Be Written ?
I thought at first it might be but the writer was perhaps too highly critical of DD's early movie career at WB. Were it not for her years at WB - she certainly would not have become better known before the public at that time and during those years. Besides those WB films are very entertaining and p...
