Re: Doris Day and the Page Cavanaugh Trio

Hi, Mario – Creating a playlist of Day/Cavanaugh recordings sounds like a fun project! Does your CD include their rendition of He’s Such a Gentleman? If not, you can hear it on Youtube. You may know that Cavanaugh was not just a jazz pianist. Although not noted for it, he could also play classical m...

A fascinating interview, Howard -- and what a fun project for Les, Jr. Will eagerly await the release of this CD.

Re: Remembering Doris Day (on Twitter)

Carmel's weekly newspaper, the Pine Cone, publishes a quarterly magazine called Healthy Lifestyles. Every issue includes a profile of a health care provider. The profile in the issue that came yesterday is of Dr. Bradford Carl, a dentist. One of his patients is Clint Eastwood, and Doris was another....

Re: Doris's favorite 1966 recording

Hi, Peter -- It was just by chance that I noticed a "thumbs up" comment about a Youtube presentation. The comment was posted by someone who worked for her several years ago and who used to play internet videos for her. I can't quote it exactly, but the gist was, "I shared it with Doris and she said ...

Re: The Doris Day Forum

Bryan, I say "Hear, hear!" and "Amen!" to the thoughts Michael, Paul, and Peter have expressed. Can't improve on those . . . but I do want to extend my sincere thanks for the privilege you afforded me to write about the music aspect of Doris's career -- and for your patience with my lack of computer...

Doris's favorite 1966 recording

On more than one occasion, I think, Doris was quoted as saying that "Secret Love" was her favorite song of all those she recorded. I've always wondered, but had been unable to discover, whether she had a favorite of the handful of singles she recorded in 1966 just prior to the expiration of her cont...

Re: The Tunnel of Love

I think your take on this film is spot on, Paul. As much as I liked Glenn Ford, I doubt that even he could've helped to salvage it . . . although it would have been a treat to see him and Doris as co-stars in a different picture. When Bob Carroll was called in to do one of the re-writes on the scrip...

Thank you, Michael. 'Tis a pity that Congress can't bypass its normal procedures and just take a floor vote instead of having the resolution delayed in a committee for who knows how long!

Re: Forum Banners 2019

Michael, your comment about preserving and protecting Doris's legacy reflects my feelings exactly. I, too, enjoy seeing a new banner now and then (although I think the current one is just terrific and would vote for it to be permanent if a choice were to be made about that). Bryan, I echo Michael's ...

Peter, these photos from an AFRS broadcast are great. I'm pretty sure that's Hy Averback on the right. He was the announcer for Armed Forces Radio Service, as well as for Bob Hope's program and several others during and after WWII. He was also a comedy writer and a director of many episodes of vario...

You're right, Howard -- I do appreciate this piece. Reich is such a respected jazz critic, and I think his assessment of Doris's vocal talent is among the best I've ever read.

Re: What is the best biography of Doris?

You posed really good questions to Kaufman, Bryan. It's been a long time since I read his bio of Doris, but I remember being impressed by the enormous amount of research he did for it. It's hard to be objective when writing about somebody one admires, but I think he generally succeeded in doing that.

I couldn't get the link to work, though, so here's the text of the May 17 story: "A life-size sculpture of Doris Day in her Calamity Jane role is on display at Devendorf Park for the Carmel Art in the Park event. Local artist Steven Whyte sculpted the piece for t...

Re: Doris Day has died

Once a year the Carmel Art Festival is held, an event at which artists in all mediums can display their work. This year the festival occurred just 4 days after Doris's passing. One of the artists was Steven Whyte, who 2 years ago did a life-sized clay image that depicts Doris as Calamity Jane. You c...

What a nice moment to drink a toast to Doris with your friends, Bryan. Glad you got to do that. And thanks for the link to that BBC story. What recordings of hers would be on your Top 5 list? Re: Doris Day has died

Yesterday I was in the grocery store after finishing my shifts at the SPCA shop in Carmel. While waiting in line, the elderly gentlemen ahead of me saw the SPCA emblem on my shirt and said, "You've lost Doris." I nodded and replied that I'm sad about that; it was so sudden. He commented that he live...
