Re: 2020 Doris Day photos

The costumes Debbie Reynolds collected over 4+ decades were auctioned in 3 separate events beginning in 2011 by Profiles in History, a California auction house. The total from the first 2 auctions was $25 million. A video of Debbie speaking at one of the auctions can be found on her website (Debbier...

Such a fine collection of Monterey Film Festival photos, Peter -- thank you! Doris's enjoyment of the evening is so apparent.

Re: 2020 Doris Day photos

The photo of Doris with Emil Gilels leads me to wonder who the other 2 men were with them. Gilels was a Russian-born pianist who began a series of tours to different countries in the mid-1950s. On every tour he was accompanied by KGB agents. If you would like to watch a few minutes of one of his sol...

Re: Music critic Will Friedwald on Doris Day.

Hi, Peter -- Glad you enjoyed reading these Friedwald excerpts. In my view, he's a really astute music historian and I love the humor he interjects into his reviews.

Happy Easter weekend to you and the other Forum members, too.

Re: Music critic Will Friedwald on Doris Day.

Will Friedwald's book called The Great Jazz & Pop Vocal Albums is an in-depth critique of nearly 5 dozen albums recorded between 1948 and 2002. The work of Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra is represented by 2 albums apiece, as is the work of Peggy Lee and Sarah Vaughan. Th...

Re: Chatting about Doris...

Thanks for this link, Michael. I made some notes during the auction and was interested that the 4 Golden Globes combined fetched nearly as much as the Model A car. Doris's partner at Cypress Inn, Denny Levett, owns a number of collectible cars, which led me to wonder whether he might've been the hig...

Re: Forum Banners 2019

I'm pretty sure it was not taken in Spain. That outcropping on the left looks quite a bit like Morro Rock, which is about 100 miles south of Monterey. Morro Bay is about 20 miles north of Pismo Beach. There are photos of the Melchers in Monterey in the early 1950s, and they also went to Pismo Beach ...

Johnny, my notes show 2 different recording dates for "S' Wonderful", one in January 1950 and the other in May 1951. I don't which one was used in "Crime Wave."

Johnny Mandel comment about Doris

A book called "The B Side" contains an interview with multi-award winning songwriter and arranger Johnny Mandel. In it he recalls being hired by Mitch Miller to arrange an album for Doris. While he was working on it, Miller said that he wanted Mandel to write in the style of Ray Coniff, using "wordl...

Re: 2020 Doris Day photos

Peter, this latest group of photos from you is really special. I especially like those in which Doris is wearing the blue and white striped shirt. In what year would you say they were taken? I'm thinking 1956 or 1957.

Re: Lullaby of Broadway

Writers, some of whom I think are often envious of the talent they criticize, can disparage "Lullaby" all they want, but the public liked it -- and, of course, ticket sales are the goal of any studio. (The album from the film was hugely popular as well; it charted at #1.) Warner Bros. was well aware...

Re: Doris Day Changed Us Forever

Nice article. Thanks for posting it, Bryan. The quote in it from Mollie Haskell (that Doris was ". . . so much more talented . . . than the insipid image popularized by her detractors") is, I think, an excellent one sentence evaluation.

Just came across the text of a long interview with Bernie Kopell, who talked about some memories of working with Doris and remaining friends with her after her TV show. Re: 2020 Doris Day photos

I think this will answer the questions about the photo showing Doris between 2 men. The man on the left is bandleader Stan Kenton and the young man with the mustache is George Weidler. Kenton hired Weidler in 1947 (what month, I don't know) and immediately wrote a piece especially for him that has a...

When one considers that those 6 nominations occurred over a period of just 12 years, it's rather remarkable. It reminds me of something Rosalind Russell wrote about her own nominations -- "Always a bridesmaid, never a bride!"

Re: Duet - What Happened?

Good question, Michael. Never on Doris's part, but I think self-promotion contributed to the album's lack of success among the listening public. In my view, part of the blame lies at Mitch Miller's feet. His tenure as A&R man at Columbia Records was beginning to wane by 1962. The label did not have ...

Re: Young Man With a Horn

Certainly the compliments for Ted McCort’s work are well deserved, and I think Curtiz’s direction was also excellent. To me, a lot of the credit for the film’s overall appeal goes to Ray Heindorf’s musical scoring. (He also co-wrote, with Sammy Cahn, “Melancholy Rhapsody” for the film and appears in...

Interesting that this list excludes Ginger Rogers, Claudette Colbert, Rosalind Russell, Irene Dunne, and Myrna Loy. I think a few listed are too young to qualify as legends.
