Re: Forum Banners 2019

Bryan, your most recent post asked for thoughts about there not being a grave marker for Doris. For several decades I lived not far from the cemetery where John Wayne is buried, and his grave remained unmarked for almost 20 years. This was a deliberate decision made by his family out of respect for ...

Re: Poll: Doris Would Have Been Better

I just read in a book about Rodgers & Hammerstein that in the summer and fall of 1953, director Fred Zinnemann was searching for and testing various actors and actresses to cast in the film of their Oklahoma!, which would begin production the following year. He proposed Doris for the female lead, bu...

Re: 2020 Doris Day photos

Hi, Peter -- A great way to kick off this new year with such a fine collection of photos! The pianist with the pipe in his mouth is neither George Weidler nor Frank Comstock. In 1952, Weidler would have been just 26 years old and Comstock would have been 30 -- both too young to be that man. I think ...

Re: The Lives They Lived (Doris Day) by Anthony Giardina

Much of what Giardina wrote struck me as just a repetition of the same stale pap that so many others have peddled. Kudos to Joan Merrill for refuting it so expertly.

Re: Les Brown, Jr. on Doris Day and a new recording!

Happy New Year to DD's cadre of devoted fans! Howard, I don't have any direct contact info for Les Brown, Jr., but you could try calling Joel Guldin. He is the founder and organizer of an annual festival held in Pennsylvania to showcase the music of the Brown band. The festival's website shows a pho...

Re: Forum Banners 2019

Happy New Year to you, too, Bryan -- and to all the Forum members who contribute so much. I think Scott Delucchi's comment that Doris "will be deeply missed" says it all. She was such a class act, and I'm just very grateful that we can continue to hear her voice and see her performances.

Re: Top 5 Favourite Doris Day Christmas Songs

Thanks for posting the lyrics, Johnny. Martin Broones wrote or co-wrote several other songs Doris recorded, including The Prodigal Son, The Everlasting Arms, David's Psalm, and Be a Child at Christmas. When she was a devout Christian Scientist, he was her practitioner. (I read once that he was the f...

Re: Chatting about Doris...

Two songs (but not from her films) whose titles remind me of Doris are "The Song is You" and "There Will Never Be Another You," both of which she recorded in 1956. Five others I think portray her personal philosophy: "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries," "On the Sunny Side of the Street," "Shakin' the ...

Re: Chatting about Doris...

Some of the comments in this collection are indeed quite funny, Bryan! I like Jimmy Stewart, but tend to agree with you about "It's a Wonderful Life." As far as the comment that none of the songs in "An American in Paris" is any good -- holy cow! They're some of the most time-tested compositions of ...

Re: The Complete Recordings of Doris Day

Simon -- Yes, I believe "Tunnel of Love" and "I Enjoy Being a Girl" were issued on 78s in the U.S. The flip side on "Tunnel" was "Run Away Skiddaddle Skidoo" and on the latter, "Kissin' My Honey." The flip side on #41195 "Everybody Loves a Lover" was "Instant Love," but the info I have does not show...

Re: The Complete Recordings of Doris Day

Another fine update, Simon! Steven Abrams has compiled an enormous listing of 78 rpm recordings from many different labels, and his info indicates a “yes” answer to the questions you posed as to whether these were issued on 78s: Oct. 30, 1956 – “Nothing in the World” #40952 Nov. 1, 1957 – “The Man W...

Re: The Complete Recordings of Doris Day

Simon, did you want specific dates for the Soundies recorded in 1941? If so, my notes show:

April 7 - My Lost Horizon
April 13 - Once Over Lightly
April 21 - Is It Love, Or Is It Conscription?

February: "It now seems highly likely that Doris Day will play a lead role. Hitchcock and writer Angus MacPhail work on developin...

Re: Introduction

Welcome aboard, Simon. As someone whose father was a classically trained vocalist, I began hearing music while still in the womb! I can listen to Doris's singing every day and not tire of it. She had such talent in so many areas that it's impossible to narrow down my favorites in any category to jus...
