Re: The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Doris Day

Thanks for this news, Peter. Should be a nice addition to listeners' Christmas music collection. I think the CD is supposed to be available from Amazon the first week in December.

Re: 2019 Doris Day pictures

Yes, that's Mickey Mantle in one of those 3 baseball photos. I'm certain they were taken at Yankee stadium, as the plaque on the box seat in front of Mel Allen shows it as belonging to Mrs. E. G. Barrow, widow of longtime Yankee general manager Ed Barrow. My guess is that the Melchers attended that ...

That "Pillow Talk" photo is one of my all-time favorites, Bryan. Sure doesn't seem like 60 years have passed since it was taken!

Johnny, one of my favorite old films with Gene Tierney is "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir." She and Rex Harrison really worked well onscreen together, I think.

Re: Do Not Disturb

Spot on with every point, Michael. If Doris hadn't been so resilient personally and able to "move on," as Terry Melcher once commented, her Animal League and Animal Foundation might not have been established. I think those are serendipitous postscripts to what was an unfortunately shortened movie ca...

I think Les, Jr. is right -- his dad and Doris would be delighted with this album.

Forgot to mention that "Slowpoke" was written by Chilton Price (although not fully credited to her), who also wrote "Never Look Back," which Doris sang in "Love Me or Leave Me."

Re: Les Brown, Jr. on Doris Day and a new recording!

So glad that "I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin'" and "Slowpoke" are included on this release. Although Doris said the up-tempo numbers weren't always her favorites, nobody sang them better.

Re: Doris Day on Live Radio Shows 40's/50's

Thanks for sharing this link, Peter. I think Doris's rendition of "You Go to My Head," backed by just a pianist, is even better than the recording she made in January of 1949. If there was ever any doubt about her talent as a jazz vocalist, this live performance should have settled that question!

Re: Great American Songbook award

Johnny, I think it would be just great if your idea of a DD museum in Cincinnati would come to pass. Wouldn't it be neat if Dr. Bob Maltz, who was responsible for that city's honoring of Doris in 2017, could get the city to have a museum?

Great American Songbook award

This may be old news to the rest of you, but I just learned that another award was added this year to the list of those bestowed on Doris -- the Great American Songbook Foundation's Hall of Fame award. I couldn't determine whether it was given prior to her passing or posthumously. It makes me wonder...

Re: 2019 Doris Day pictures

Peter, you've done it again with this set of rare clippings! Seeing these ads reminded me that Doris also sang with the Jimmy James orchestra, I think sometime in 1943. One place James and Doris appeared included the Netherland Plaza Hotel in Cincinnati. There are some really nice photos of its stil...

Re: Booklist for DayReaders

You're welcome, Johnny. I think Sam Trust is someone whose work is done behind the scenes, and so that's why his name isn't commonly known to people outside the music industry. I had not heard of him, either, until I read a comment from him about Doris in the Carmel newspaper recently. There is no i...

Re: Booklist for DayReaders

Just finished reading a book by Sam Trust titled "Would You Trust This Man with Your Songs?", subtitled "A Life in Music Business." Sam Trust is a semi-retired music publisher who lives in Carmel, and his book is a collection of stories only an industry insider would be able to tell. All 10 reviewer...

Ania, thanks for these rare photos. I believe those with the Melchers were taken at the Warner Ranch where the location shots for Calamity Jane were filmed. Doris's love for animals was apparent.

Re: Products that Doris Endorsed

Hi, Docwheels -- When Doris endorsed Swan soap, she was actually a weekly cast member of Bob Hope's radio show. In the early 1950s, though, she began endorsing other products on her own. Two that I recall are Lustre Creme shampoo and Lux soap. Later she did print ads for Parker pens, Napier jewelry,...

If you search for Carmelmagazine.com and click on the Archives tab and then select the August 2019 issue, at the bottom of the page you will find the cover story called Sentimental Journey. It's a nice collection of remembrances of Doris and contains about 10 or so photos, some of which I'd not seen...

Re: Chatting about Doris...

Bryan, you asked about how people are feeling 3 months after Doris's passing. Years ago when my father died, I received many condolences. The one I most remember was an encouraging note from someone who wrote, "When my dad died, I thought the sun would never shine again -- but it did." That sender w...

Re: The Doris Day Forum

I, too, like Bryan's suggestion of starting a general section similar to a blog. As Michael notes, it would really be great if we could keep the photos in a separate section. Having just those 2 sections should simplify things, I think.
