Re: Vocal Problems !

And on that birthday show of more than two years ago the interviewer/DJ Kevin Kaul followed immediately with the statement "It's great to hear you sing, Doris"--a huge understatement, beautifully delivered.

the song:

The song that Bettye sang was "Love Reign O'er Me", and it's on YouTube under something like "Bettye LaVette at Kennedy Center Honors".

It'd be easy to put 'here' for someone savvy..

Bettye LaVette in Washington DC

The late Ralph McKnight of the forum was a great fan of Bettye LaVette (as is webmaster Bryan) and would have enjoyed her performance in tonight's (Dec 30th) television airing of the 31st Kennedy Center Honors. She sang what must have been a big hit of The Who's (but what? sorry) and really rocked.....

Re: NEW BOOK

Is this still about a NEW BOOK?! (A new book's gotten lost here, lol etc..) In a NEW BOOK I'm on page 174, where one of the sisters in "Young at Heart" is referred to as being played by Alison Fraser. In the Index of this book, "she's" there: "Alison Fraser".. But also there is "Elizabeth Fraser" an...

"Young Man With a Horn": all three stars billed above the title are still living and working a little, or a lot, 58 years later.. KD, LB, & DD. Guess I've said this before..

For what other 1950 film, or one earlier, can that be said?

Re: What is your favorite romantic photo of Doris?

Yup, it is off-topic, but.. Louis Jourdan is still living.. as is Kirk Douglas (he and Lauren Bacall and Doris Day were ALL billed above the title in Young Man With a Horn, released 58 years ago now--and they're all still living; it must be a record of some kind).

Re: NEW BOOK

"Film noir" -- hard to define, but some people think it requires more than one evil character among the major players (I think). By that definition, "Julie" wouldn't qualify. One thing I've read about the movie, somewhere, is that the director used aerial shots to GREAT advantage, meaning shots take...

Re: wild fire in monterey county

Suzie, thanks for the thought, but, although there have been unusual brief thunderstorms lately (including lightning that may have ignited some fires).. RAIN could not normally be expected to turn up in the summer as it does in the mid-west and eastern U.S. (Google up Mediterranean Climate and see W...

Re: AFI 10 Top 10 Romantic Comedies

I'm with you Barb. I never watch anything from AFI. It's ALL spin. Pillow Talk? Sure, but "MUSICALS" didn't even make it into the top TEN "genres"! What does that tell you? They're trying to appeal to a younger audience? Okay, musicals are supposed to be dead, but they still keep coming along (Dream...

John, it appears you had to abandon your previous unfinished post...(?), but you're definitely right in noticing the anti-Doris axe that Weingarten has to grind in his "review" of The Book. So, thanks, Laurie, for the link. He's called a writer and begins.. "A film professor I had in college..." Oh,...

I haven't stayed there. It's just a less-expensive alternative than what you quoted. It wouldn't be a good idea to comment on whether it's in a "good section" or not, either. In NYC you grab a cab or jump on the subway, just like in a movie set in New York.

Try "Ye Olde Carlton Arms" on East 25th St if you're feeling 'artful' (means less than upscale). They have a website.

There's a hotel with a "Doris Day room" too, but probably pricier--if I think of the name I'll post it.

She could be "physical" just singing a song, sometimes--back in the day (even if she was lip-syncing)... One of the best examples can be seen in Lullaby of Broadway's "It Was Just One of Those Things". If you haven't seen this youTube, check it out.. Totally physical, head to toe.. face, hands, ever...

It will always be Esther Williams' and Ricardo Montalban's song for me, in Neptune's Daughter, 1949. They were memorable, if not real singers, but Red Skelton and Betty Garrett are said (in Wikipedia) to have done it in the same movie.

John, thought you'd be back to this, and we'll have to agree to disagree (you say copyWRITE; I say copyRIGHT)--with dayniac perhaps unwittingly supplying the un-confounding terminology to define the book: "it comes across as her autobiography". Babe.. sweetheart.. (whatever your name is), it sounded to me that your parents were talking.

No one in high school gets so emphatic, so wrong-headed, except around the kitchen table.

To quote howard: "that's my story and I'm sticking to it"
