Re: Singers who had most unusual voices

I would say that Alice Faye also had a most unusual sound when she sang. It was very low and mellow - a sort of very relaxed tone. Its too bad that 20 th Century Fox would not permit her to record during her prime - Zanuck was quite strict about that - so her voice quite obviously is not heard much ...

According to her book - Debbie was a friend of Eva's - she even tried to impersonate Eva to her and Eva said - 'well you sound more like Zsa Zsa' or something to that effect.

Re: Are There More DORIS fans outside the USA ?

This is very true.
That is probably why the Bing Crosby & Perry Como Appreciation Societies are in the UK.
In the USA - you are only as good as your last film or recording ! How soon they forget !!!!!!

Is There An Exact Account of How Many Songs DD Recorded ?

One reads and hears all sorts of high numbers. She did record extensively.
Is there an exact or at least a rough estimate ?
Thanks.

Re: Maureen O'Hara - 90 years old

Jane Russell was born in 1920 - don't know when her actual b-day is but she is about 90. I wonder if TCM will also do a tribute to her (if they have not done so already !) as they did for Miss O'Hara.

Re: Lauren Bacall Set to Receive Honorary Oscar

I remember seeing a very short acceptance of an honorary oscar by [if I'm not mistaken]- Myrna Loy. It was filmed in what looked like her apartment, although she was dressed in evening dress and literally only said two words - 'thank you'. Yes that's right. Miss Loy still received her Oscar but she...

Howard - now you have really opened up that 'proverbial can of worms' ! Yes there is Jane Powell - she resides somewhere in Connecticut with her husband former child actor Dickie Moore who worked with Shirley Temple (who is very much still with us !) Then we have Miss ANN BLYTH - remember her ...

Re: Patty Andrews of THE ANDREW SISTERS !

Yes beautifully blended harmonies ! Music is just not the same anymore ! Alot of shouting and screaming and singers going way out of their natural registers so that one cannot hear the words. Just a great deal of Loud, LOUDER, LOUDEST ! We can see now what Doris and others would have been up against...

Three cheers for Miss O'Hara - good stock, like Miss Day and the (few) others left from that generation such as Jane Russell; Liz Taylor and Lauren Bacall.[/quote] And we must not forget MISS DEBBIE REYNOLDS who is still very active in show business. Sorry to read of Miss O'Hara being in a wheelchai...

Any Eleanor Powell fans here ? Wonderful dancer and a most charming screen presence. She received many mixed reviews - some people liked her and some were indifferent. For me - she radiated much warmth and carried herself well before the camera. Naturally it was the dancing that was KING here and sh...

Re: Any Betty Hutton Fans ?

That is quite a fun story, Howard ! Thanks for sharing. Betty Hutton did a wonderful job on AGYG - and by far was a major improvement over Garland. No comparison. When Garland was dropped by MGM - they tested (according to Betty Hutton) - June Allyson and Betty Garrett but I doubt either of them wou...

Re: It's a Great Feeling

Its a very amusing and entertaining flick. It has gotten lost in the shuffle as she starred in so many other more memorable movies. She is surrounded by a very interesting cast. I don't think the songs there became major HITS but there are many such movie musicals where the songs were pleasant enoug...

It is all good but I truly wish there could be at least one national radio station here in the USA that plays Doris' recordings as well as those of her colleagues and contemporaries. All the other music has come to dominate the Air Waves and there is way too much TALK RADIO - we do need more good mu...

I notice that most fan organizations of Doris and many of her colleagues and contemporaries are based in countries outside the USA. Both the Bing Crosby & Perry Como are in the UK. This no doubt is her finest role and the movie itself is excellent in that it moves quickly - there are no dull stretches and the songs and the scoring are first rate. The production itself has much period flavor and the supporting cast is fine as well. The plot is highly amusing. I very much like G...

Are there any fans here of Betty Hutton ? I know that she and Doris were both married to Marty Melcher. Neither of those were happy unions.
Thanks.

My first introduction to Doris took place in 1966. I was only 7 and the movie GLASS BOTTOM BOAT was released.
