Was it maybe at the opening of that hotel Marty bought shares in which she hated?

Yes, that's it - Marty made this deal with Doris' money and name for what was supposed to be the start of a DD hotel chain. Doris went to the opening, she thought the hotel was really tacky and was furious! That was the end of that business idea.

I love it when Doris gets mad!

Can someone else come up with a 'Story behind the picture'?

The hotel deals were made in the 60s. Judging by DD's hairdo, it was some time in the 50s. I still say it's a SHARE benefit. I believe I read it somewhere some time ago.

Howard, why let the facts get in the way of a good story!! :D

But if you are right, thank you for setting the record straight (and I mean that most sincerely! )

But I read the story and the caption to this Corbis pic, which I've forgotten but it made me think that it was at at the event I described. And why would Doris look annoyed at a benefit?

Well, it could be that the picture was just taken in a bad moment and doesn't show "the real Doris" that night. ;)

Yeah, she probably looked like this when she saw Marty's 'Doris Day Hotel':

Well, Bryan's pic perfectly exemplifies the story, but Howard is correct. The hotel opening happened in 1962, and there is a picture of Doris and Marty cutting the ribbon for it the book for the Bear Family boxset "Move Over, Darling."

Here is a pic of the hotel as it looked in 1965, pretty close to the opening...

And as it looked last year... highly modified.

If it was a SHARE benefit, Doris had to sing for some sort of auction bid. She hated to sing in public.

Thanks Marti. Here's a new one - many of you may know the answer so hold off a bit if you do
- or you can say you know and give a little clue (not too easy) if people get stuck.

What went on during the rehearsal of this scene that delayed filming?

I'm not sure, but it had something to with filming from the left side or the right side only.

Yeah, both of them have the same "chocolate side" (is that the word? Is directly translated from German) and wanted to be filmed from that side.

Never heard it called that before, Marion! But it's a good way of describing it - one side is 'sweeter' than the other.

This is the story in a short clip from a documentary about Doris, "Hollywood Greats":

Film director, Delbert Mann speaking.

Actually, I noticed that looking at Cary's left side, his neck looks a little 'scraggy'? - or not as well-definded as on the right.

I've always been good at inventing new phrases. :D

When I lived in the states as an exchange student my host sister used the expression "ants in the pants" - I couldn't remember it correctly later on so for me it then was "bees in the butt", as that again is the German equivalent of "ants in the pants". She kinda liked it...

I got a picture, too, but the quality is unfortunately very bad as it is from a YT-clip.

What's the story behind this picture?

Hope it's not too easy...

Clue:

It's not something in the picture but about the making of that scene

Is it about her seeing the stairs they wanted her to dance up and down, and she announced "You gotta be outta your minds! I can't even walk up and down those stairs!"?

BTW, "bees in the butt." Great expression! :D

Very close but I'm fishing for what followed after doing the scene.

Do you mean when the choreographer told Doris that she could never do what Doris just did?

Yep, and that she (the choreographer) only indicated all the steps during rehearsals, when Doris wasn't there.

You won 100 points ;)
