Doris Day and Rock Hudson to Become "Barbies"

Last month Mattel announced their "Dynasty" Barbie collection, and now we are hearing that Mattel is set to release a new celebrity collection. Among the first to be Barbie-ized are the legendary Doris Day and Rock Hudson. The "Pillow Talk" collection was produced with the help of Doris Day herself as well as her team. Other celebrities in the collection include Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly, Reba McEntire, Elvis Presley, “I Love Lucy.” “Bewitched," and “I Dream of Jeannie.” You won't have to wait too long to get your hands on the golden couple, Mattel is expecting to release them during the summer in stores like Walmart and Toys "R" Us, as well as online. Yes, this is great to read, although the debate has started if the 'Doris' doll looks enough like Miss Day = dressed in the iconic white evening dress from PT. I do see the 'Rock' doll more like Rock than the Doris one - but still, it is a wonderful tribute.

I think it's fantastic! I agree, the doll doesn't particularly look like Doris, but the fashions are similar, and it's still a nice tribute! I'm so happy that this is happening - I wish they were a bit less money, but still, I will probably get them. :D

I'm excited about buying one even if the doll does not look much like Doris! $70 is a lot of money but I'm still buying one! :D

I read that Doris, herself was in on designing this doll!
When I look at the picture, the doll's teeth don't even look like teeth!
Just a painted white strip in her mouth! Looks weird!

I love Doris' comments on her website. I liked both dolls from the start and knowing Doris is pleased makes them even better.

From the Doris Day website:

02/22/2011
Mattel Unveils Doris Day Barbie Collector Doll

Carmel, Calif. - Doris Day was honored last week when Mattel announced she and Rock Hudson would be the latest celebrities featured in its Barbie Collector Series. Ms. Day and Mr. Hudson are immortalized as Jan Morrow and Brad Allen from their famous 1959 on-screen pairing, "Pillow Talk."

Ms. Day was excited about the dolls' unveiling, which came at this year's International Toy Fair in New York City. The dolls will be available this summer from retailers including Wal-Mart and Toys R Us.

"I just loved Jan Morrow," Ms. Day said from her Carmel, Calif. home. "She was so spunky and stylish. And working with Rock was always a joy. He was an honest-to-goodness doll!"

It is rare to have any of these celebrity dolls look exactly like their real life counterpart. Sometimes they don't even do a custom face mold, just use an existing Barbie face and call it "Barbie as Doris Day" or something like that. I love that Mattel is making this set, and already preordered mine.

On a side note, I really enjoyed the interview with Michael Williams (http://www.dorisdaytribute.com/blog/201 ... ck-giftset) the photographer who covered the debut of these dolls. Like him, I discovered Doris Day's movies only recently, and have been thrilled to get to know her (through her movies and singing) in the past five years or so (and discovering this forum has been great, too!)

I read about this, I think I'll have to buy the Doris/Rock, I Love Lucy, and Bewitched ones. I think this is a really cute idea. I find it odd that you can find many things with Marilyn and Audrey, but hardly anything with Doris.

Neither am I [into dolls] - however I am delighted by this as it just adds to the [rightly deserved] iconic status of Doris Day in popular culture= something that [thankfully] is being put to rights more and more as time goes on - and rightly so!
