Here's a wonderful radio interview done just a few years ago. In case you've never heard it, or just want to enjoy it again, here's the link:

I think I have this in my collection in the "Cloud." Let me look around. If not, I will see if I can get it and put it up on the Cloud (box.net or mediafire) so that people can have it for their collection also.

I could not find the recording. What I have is from the *Stephen Schwartz* radio show not Jonathan. However, I would be happy to tell you how you can record it. Write to me at -

Thanks Howard - I had heard this but forgotten. So interesting to hear her say that Marty was responsible for most of the "silly" songs - then, she was not sure what was going on at the record company. Wonder what the real story is? Do you know if there is any video of Doris on the Tonite Show when McLean Stevenson is guest hosting? The audio is so funny, would love to see what they were doing. Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

I didn't hear it that she was really blaming Marty. The reason that she wanted to quit Columbia was because of the novelty tunes that Mitch Miller made everybody at that studio record. If Marty were to blame at all, it was because of the money.

Frank Sinatra was more his "own man" where Doris pretty much did what Marty "suggested." Frank probably thought more about his career as a singer and not of a major movie star. The opposite was probably the case with Doris since the bulk of their money was coming from her movies and not her recordings. Marty most likely did *not* want to have to pay Doris' way out of Columbia, which is what Sinatra did. Therefore, Doris, Rosemary and the others at that studio back then sang dumb songs that were much beneath them. Why Mitch Miller did what he did is a mystery to me.

I think Sinatra did the right thing for himself and no doubt made the money back. He appeared in Vegas and other spots - namely night clubs - and my guess is that he wanted to stick with sophisticated music without a silly tune in his line up.

Yes, there is video with D. and Stevenson. I don't have it, however.

I thought the video had been destroyed or am I mistaken (I hope!)?

Thanks Lauren.
It sounds like Mitch Miller was the culprit. Some of it sounds just like his tv show. That being said, I will listen to Doris sing anything and love it! I guess it's a testament to her "giving her all" to every project. What a special woman.
Howard ,
I hope you are wrong about the video being destroyed. What a shame, I bet it is hilarious. Maybe one one has it. We can only hope.
Best to you both,
Jill

Great interview. Being across the country from New York where this radio program is domiciled, I did not realize until recently that Jonathan Schwartz is the son of composer Arthur Schwartz -- who co-wrote songs such as "That's Entertainment," "Dancing in the Dark," and "I See Your Face Before Me." No wonder Jonathan seemed so knowledgeable about music!
