I love this image from Young at Heart - so special to us fans because it's got Doris and 'The voice of the Century', Frank Sinatra. I love old blue eyes too. I remember sitting in a park in London and buying a newspaper with news of his death taking up all of the front page and feeling upset.

Where were you when Frank Sinatra died? Can you remember? I really want to know!

I'm living in a Doris Day world at the moment as I'm updating the main website. Sometimes I wish she hadn't made 39 films! Musiclover (Judy) is really helping me with editing and proofreading.

I love this image, too, Bryan; it's one of my favorite scenes in a film that I think is generally underrated.

Where was I when I learned of Sinatra's passing? I was working in an accounting office and heard a radio announcer read that sad news. As fine a vocalist as he was, I do wish that he had not continued to sing when the quality of his voice began to decline. Beverly Sills commented on her retirement from singing by saying something to the effect of, "I wanted to quit before people said that I should've stopped a long time ago." In my view, she and Doris made the right decision.

P.S. You're making great progress on the website updating!

Hi there,

Nice banner, nice film. Would have been better, I think, if they had more songs together and a deeper view of the love between Laurie & Barney. Also I'm not so keen on the colors used for this film, somehow it looks if the film is painted. I've seen different coppies...

Wish Doris & Frank recorded more together. Still searching for songs they sung on Your Hit Parade. Somewhere there must be a Tea For Two duet from them.

Doris is my nr. 1 in music, Frank is nr. 2. I came home from High School when I heard the news on the radio. Was sad to hear it. Loved the Airplay they did at that time of his amazing music, before it was very quiet (also after...) As it is around Doris music. If there is some Airplay it's Que sera, sera.

Love this movie, this is another one that takes you back in time, with the love of the family and how they stuck together through good times and bad, through tears and laughter. I too wish that Doris and Frank had recorded more music together. It is really a shame, they were both together enough for it to happen. I can't really recall where I was when I heard of Frank's death, although others stand out, like Elvis, Diana, even Kennedy.
Love this movie and the banner.
PS. I know you said it as a joke, but Doris should have made more films, she still had so much to give when she retired. Sometimes I think she even regrets it. :(

It is a beautiful banner that communicates so much about the scene in contrasts. The warm yellow and white theme is evident in Doris' dress with apron and repeated in the curtains. Frank's character is dressed in black and white with a little touch of red. The window is cracked open letting the cool air in, while Frank sits with a cigarette in hand and his head tilted looking to understand what Doris is saying. It looks like a beer bottle on the counter in front of Frank but it could be oil. While Doris' is focused on icing the gingerbread men, her expression seems to say something different that challenges Frank. There is the left-over dough perhaps symbolizing unfinished business.

There is a really interesting composition in this scene. There is warmth of Doris' character and the coolness of Frank's. This study in contrasts drives the story.

I think Young At Heart is a wonderful film.

Both YAH banners are stunning.

A sweet nostalgic movie that goes perfectly with a cold, rainy afternoon and a hot cup of tea.

The banner is terrific.

In the first few moments I looked at the banner with Doris, I thought it was Kim Novak in The Man With The Golden Arm. This film was made in 1955 and Young At Heart was made in 1954. The hair styles are similar. Frank Sinatra was Kim's leading man.

Thanks all - and Johnny, I didn't realise that Frank had made two films with Kim Novak - didn't really want to see him as a junkie so I've avoided The Man With the Golden Arm - whatever that means!

Came across this while working on Midnight Lace on the new site with Judy:

Image

Tony Curtis visits Doris on the set of Midnight Lace. They both won the World Film Favorites Award at the Golden Globes two years earlier in 1958.

Love the banner! Tony Curtis co-starred in two films I really like from around this period -- Operation Petticoat and Capt. Newman, M.D. I think he was quite good in both.

Thanks all - Ray, re: "What new site? How will we get there?" I'm overhauling the main site, with Judy's help in editing the reviews - it's got a nice white background and is looking all fresh and new. A couple more weeks and it should be done and will replace the current dorisday.net.

Love this banner!

I would have liked to see Doris and Tony co-star in a film, perhaps Tunnel of Love. Tony had just finished Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon.
Tony had a light and breezy comedic touch that would have complimented Doris' brilliance in comedy.
They look great together in the banner.
