Musiclover, what comes to mind is Meadowland.

If you're referring to Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey, no. The word "meadows" is in its location name, but this specific venue was in New York.

How about Flushing Meadows Park? Full name now is Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.

Renie, you're right about the city's name -- but what was the specific venue at which she sang? It's very historical.

When you say "specific venue" I'm not sure what you mean. So, I'll tell you what I found in a book written by a man who was there and saw/heard Doris sing. He said it was "at the New York World's Fair, Dancing Campus Pavillion."

Good work, Renie! In the 6 months of 1940 that the NY World's Fair operated, it had 20 million visitors, many of whom enjoyed Les Brown's (and others') bands at the Dance Campus. Brown's trombonist Si Zentner escorted DD to and from the band's hotel quarters when she sang at the fair.

I assume this means I can post the next quiz question. I have to think about it a little and will get one posted tomorrow.

Doris Day had a knack for delivering a funny line in a movie with great skill. One case in point is when she said, in response to another person, "White or whole wheat?" What movie was this in and in what context was it said?

Then I have a second, unrelated quiz question. Can you name the character and real life actor Doris married in It's A Great Feeling and the town where they were married?

No idea about the first question, but I'll take a stab at the second. Seems to me the groom was Errol Flynn (character name Jeffrey Bushfinkle) and the town was something like Gurkey's Corner, Wisconsin.

Musiclover: Yes, on question #2. She married Errol Flynn, character name Jeffrey Bushdinkle, in Gurkey's Corners, WI. It was such a surprise to see him but then, It's A Great Feeling was just full of cameos by movie stars and other well known Hollywood folks.

Let's wait and see if anyone knows the answers to question #1.

Renie, I did not want to give answers so early in the game, but since the gate is open, I will. I believe that the white or wheat bread comment came when Doris accepted the sandwich Danny Thomas had saved for his lunch in the film "I'll See You In My Dreams." Just a guess.

Tex:

Good guess but I believe the sandwiches in I'll See You In My Dreams were salami on pumpernickel. The quote is from another film Doris made. If no one guesses it in a few days, I'll give some clues.

Well, it looks like it's time for some hints re: Doris saying "White or whole wheat?"

Very close to the end of the movie, she was involved in a discussion with her costar about a Frenchman and his children and this is when she asked the question.

Any thoughts about what movie it was and what the discussion was about?

These are getting very difficult! - But it's fun to read. :) Keep up the good work.

(actually I knew the Errol Flynn one.)

That's NOT Errol Flynn! It's Jeffrey Bushdinkel! Or, is it Robin Hood??? USA joke. Errol Flynn played Robin Hood in a movie here many years ago, for the benefit of our international forum members.

April in Paris or It's a Great Feeling?

April in Paris is correct. However, from the beginning, I've been asking for the context of the conversation in which the question, "White or whole wheat?" was asked. You may recall that I said it takes place close to the end of the film.

I'll give everyone until tomorrow to come up with the conversation. If no one gets it, I'll spill the beans.

Meanwhile, if anyone has a copy of April in Paris or can access it on the internet, you only need to watch the last ten minutes or so to see the conversation which includes the now infamous "White or whole wheat?" spoken by Doris.

OK. Here's the context in which Doris said, "White or whole wheat?"

Doris is intent on making Ray Bolger jealous so that he'll propose to her again. So, she goes home with the Frenchman, Philippe Fouquet, played by Claude Dauphin, acting as if they're up to no good. Ray Bolger follows them and Claude's wife wakes up from all the yelling going on and she comes downstairs. Then Claude says that he and his wife have 5 children to which Ray Bolger says, "If he has children, I'll eat 'em all......on toast!"
And Doris says, "White or whole wheat?"

As far as who won and therefore can post the next quiz is concerned, I can't make a decision. Musiclover answered the questions about It's A Great Feeling and Bryan identified that April in Paris was the other movie but didn't know the circumstances around "White or whole wheat?" So, I'll leave it to the 2 of them to decide where to go from here.
