Thanks jbeane - yes, great photo. I think it originated here:
http://the-rock-hudson-project.tumblr.com/ - or from heck-yeah-doris-day.

Thanks for a terrific banner that shows Doris being so appealing and sexy.

In the opening scene of Pillow Talk, was Doris' slip blue? Regardless, the slip scene shifted our senses to seeing Doris as a sexy woman and not just the girl next door (also equally attractive).

Thanks a lot!

Here's an illustration of how Doris could have looked in the role of Mrs Robinson.

Bryan and Puck,

This banner is absolutely gorgeous! Simply put Doris is beautiful. I really love the color in this banner. Doris would have been great in the role of Mrs. Robinson. An unfortunate missed opportunity. Thank you so much! Theres a whole lot of talent on this forum!

This is a gorgeous shot. I always thought she looked much better in WSYGE than WWYWTLWO, possibly because she had a much better script to work with and Brian Keith as her leading man.

Speaking of Mrs. Robinson, HBO is running a terrific interview with the late Mike Nichols called "Becoming Mike Nichols." Don't miss it if you are a fan of his films. He talks a lot about making "The Graduate" but says nothing about the casting process.

There is no question in my mind about whether Doris could have played that part. She had more range than most gave her credit for. It would have been a game changer, but I also understand why she passed on it. It was way outside her comfort zone and the film was daring for its time.

Thanks Michael. There's a long piece in Vanity Fair about the casting and background, which mentions Doris:

Image

Here’s to You, Mr. Nichols: The Making of The Graduate:
http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2008/03/graduate200803, although

Ava Gardner wanted the part, although Nichols thought she would be too difficult to work with having interviewed her.
"The 44-year-old actress told Nichols, “The first thing you must know is I don’t take my clothes off for anybody.”
“Well, I don’t think that would be required,” replied Nichols.
She then confided, “The truth is, you know, I can’t act. I just can’t act!”

The fact that he said nudity wouldn't be required makes me think he could have easily adapted the script for Doris - but I guess it was too far outside her comfort zone, So thanks to Mr Melcher we got Caprice and The Ballad of Josie instead! And the end of her film career.

Here's another great pic from the photo section - thanks to the person who posted it.

Great picture of Doris with Lemmon. It does look like Doris' mom on the right. I wish some studio would have come up with another vehicle for Doris and Lemmon to do. I thought they had wonderful chemistry together.
Like Irene Dunne done.

Thanks Ania and thanks Johnny,

And, as promised, On Moonlight Bay is next and I'm just sorting out some black and whites for Puck to add her magic colour touch so we can all have a nostalgic look back at a rather wonderful timeless film, full of fun and great songs, Before "When Doris Met Marty" and she was still heading for superstardom (with "Calamity Jane") - 65 years ago, to be precise. That's a shock, isn't it! The first Doris Day film I saw and immediately fell under her spell - not when it first came out, I hasten to add, but it feels that way sometimes!

Here's a preview:

Image

Doris with her over-imaginative brother, Billy Gray - he really made that film special, as did Mary Wickes as the Winfield’s maid Stella, Leon Ames and Rosemary DeCamp as the parents, and of course 'the boy next door' (at the time), the great Gordon MacRae.

http://www.dorisday.net/on-moonlight-bay/

I hope you'll all post some images (not all the VERY familiar ones if possible!) and share your thoughts.

Nice colorizing on the photo! I didn't see OMB until years after its release, but agree that it's such a fun film. Love Doris's comedic bits especially.
