Bryan,
Doris shows a different look than we usually see. She has a direct and somewhat serious gaze. I like this photo.
I have been watching All About Eve on TCM. I wondered what Doris would do in the Anne Baxter part as Eve Harrington. Something tells me,Doris' sincerity, earnestness, and honesty as an performer would have helped her do a really good job.

Interesting thought, Johnny - I think you are right.

Who would have had top billing though, Bette Davis or Doris? I don't think Doris ever played second lead to another actress after she got going!

Here's a nice sunny one from Puck - it's gloriously sunny in London, the hottest day of the year so far so the image fits the mood for me!

Wonderful banner, Puck. I think you really captured the true color of Doris's eyes. She has said that they are actually blue grey, but that they photograph blue. The cover of her Listen to Day album shows that as well.

Bryan, you are right about Doris ceding top billing to another female once she was well established. I believe she was top billed for the first time in Tea for Two. After its release, if I recall correctly, Ginger Rogers was the only actress to whom she was second billed.

Happy Mother's Day to the ladies on this forum!

This is a strikingly beautiful Doris banner. Like the previous banner, Doris has an expression of directness and sophistication in her eyes.

Bryan,
A veteran, Bette Davis would always get and deserve top billing.
Doris made Storm Warning around the same time All About Eve was being made. I imagined Doris as Eve Harrington being more endearing than Anne Baxter in that role. If Doris had been cast in this part, I wonder how it would have influenced her career.

Thanks Judy & Johnny.

The only thing about the Eve Harrington role is that I don't think it's meant to be played sympathetically, is it? I thought that Eve was meant to be scheming and manipulating underneath?

Puck - beautiful banner.

Bryan - I agree, that is exactly the point of Eve - that and the pretence - on the surface she was [as my grandmother would have said] "too sweet to be wholesome." I am not sure Doris had matured enough as an actress by 1950 to have pulled off the feat of portraying Eve Harrington - just my opinion.

Beautiful banner Puck. Doris is absolutely flawless. Doris's skin is still beautiful. She really knew the best techniques for preserving her skin's youthful look. Her eyes are still bright and that beautiful smile is unmistakable. She has maintained her beauty for 92 years. Thank you for sharing this gorgeous banner.

Thanks Puck. I'm sure you all recognise this:

Image

Doris Day. Love Me or Leave Me, 1955.

"After the film was released, Doris Day was deluged with mail from fans attacking her for playing a lewd woman who smoked, drank, and wore scant costumes in the nightclub scenes. Day cared about everyone who was disturbed by her characterization, and she answered every piece of mail, explaining the necessity for realism, and that it was essential to separate actress Doris Day from character Ruth Etting. She felt that as a performer, she had the same responsibility to the public that a politician has to the electorate."

"According to Doris Day, most of the scene of a violent confrontation between James Cagney (Marty Snyder) and her did not appear in the final film because it would not pass the censors. After Etting is a triumph at the Ziegfeld Follies, Snyder comes to her hotel room to see her, and she tells him to get out of her life. As originally filmed, Cagney slammed her against a wall, savagely tore off her dress, and after a tempestuous struggle, he threw her onto a bed and raped her."

"Doris Day wrote in her autobiography that she hesitated before accepting the lead in this film. Ruth Etting was a kept woman who clawed her way up from seamy Chicago nightclubs to the Ziegfeld Follies. It would require her to drink, wear scant, sexy costumes and to string along a man she didn't love in order to further her career. There was also a certain vulgarity about Ruth Etting that she didn't want to play. Producer Joe Pasternak convinced Day to accept the role because she would give the part some dignity that would play away from the vulgarity." - IMDB

I haven't taken the time to learn how to do colour like Puck - always been more attracted to black and white - but I can do blue, above, or red, etc!

I've asked Puck if she could do a colour version of the current banner.

Interesting stuff from IMDB about Love Me or Leave Me.

Great banner Bryan!

The beauty mark on her right cheek makes a strong impression. Thankfully, Doris took the role of Ruth Etting in Love Me or Leave Me, and showcased her outstanding talent as a dramatic actress. It is a really strong performance.

Another wonderful banner, Bryan!

Re: the IMDB article -- In my DVD of that film, Doris didn't smoke. Just curious: Is there one containing a scene(s) where she does smoke?

Doesn't Doris/Ruth put out a cigarette in the great scene following the medley where she sings 10 Cents a dance etc - the scene in the dressing room? May be wrong.

Funny, Ray,

No, I don't remember any smoking in LMOLM, either - perhaps she was just using the smoking-and-drinking description to illustrate the character? Unless you are right, Jas - will try and check it out.

Although Ruth Etting did have talent as well - but a bit cringe-worthy today to hear her use the word 'darkie' on 'Shakin the Blues Away' - much prefer Doris' word 'everybody'.

Thanks Puck for the great banner. I am trying to pinpoint the era for this picture. It looks like the 1949-50 period.

Thank you all, and I think the picture dates from 1947-48, when she started at Warner Brothers, the picture is made by Bert Six, just like the one I did colored many years ago... same hair style......and thank you Bryan, do love it.
