Johnny, a Google image search for 'doris day magazine covers' reveals the following:

http://tinyurl.com/doris-day-covers

And I'm sure there are 100s more.

I still have lots but I think I'll just do a few more and then move on.

Hi Bryan and Puck,

Beautiful banner again, there must be 1000's of magazine covers with Doris, she was/is loved all over the world, then and now. Great joy to see the covers, some of the inside stories are sometimes stupid....

Keep up the good work,

P

Thank you so much Bryan and Puck for this brilliant Doris Day banner. It is amongst the best. Seeing all these magazine covers tells a great story about Doris and her work and why she is universally loved to this day.

Bryan, I was fascinated by the "What might have been", photos amongst the fifty pages of covers.
There was one cover with Paul Newman and Doris in The Helen Morgan Story. Wouldn't it have been interesting to see how they would have worked together?

The second photo was of Elvis Presley and Doris. I think they would have been terrific together. I would have liked to see them sing Christmas songs together. Both have a sensuality and tenderness in their voices that would be captivating.

Thanks again!
Johnny

Having watched The Helen Morgan Story- I really cannot see Doris / Marty seriously considering it around the time it was made but it was made by the time she was free-lancing and having done Love me or Leave ME - I think the similarities were too much to LMOLM, and in addition - Helen Morgan [as portrayed in the film] was an alcoholic and [at that time] I think the Christian Science background [and the flack for LMOLM] would have deterred Doris/Marty in doing it - though I'd have loved to have seen Doris with Paul Newman in something.

Jas, your points re: the "Helen Morgan Story" are well made. About 5 months before this film was released, a television production about Morgan aired in the U.S. -- and Polly Bergen went on to earn the Emmy for portraying her.

Here's an interesting one - I won't use it as a banner though! No idea what the story behind it is, some tabloid-magazine spin, no doubt. Year is 1956 from the 'Julie' clothes and look.

Hard to imagine that a publication that has printed so many libelous stories can still be around after all these years. Although it had existed since the mid-1920s, the National Enquirer became a gossip rag after it was sold to a different owner some 30 years later . . . which makes me think that this "exclusive interview" with Doris never happened (or, if there was such an interview, that it occurred much earlier). I'm just a bit skeptical about that claim!

I wondered if it was the same magazine. I can't imagine Doris being that negative or self pitying - it must have been something taken out of context. But certainly a striking cover!

Re- the article "hate" - even then headlines usually did not bear much resemblance to the actual article- however, it could be in relation to fan mail giving Doris a hard time for drinking and playing a [kept] character such as Ruth Etting- the picture [while from Julie] could be referring to [certain] fan / Christian Science reaction to the sexy costumes, drinking etc. from LMOLM - ??? Paul?

Good thinking, Jas, it makes sense. "Love Me or Leave Me" was made the year before, 1955. As you say, Doris had a lot of criticism from fans over it - and personally wrote back to each one so it must have bothered her. But she dealt with it directly so I doubt if she dwelt on it much afterwards - that wouldn't fit in with her philosophy/beliefs as we know them.

Bryan and Jas,

Excellent perspectives! Doris shocked her fans with her brilliant dramatic performance of Ruth Etting in Love Me or Love Me.

I wonder if Doris gave The National Enquirer an interview or if the paper took pieces from fan magazine articles or other publications. The Enquirer had and has a poor reputation for factual reporting. It is characterized by sensationalism and exploitation.

I think Doris' good character would not allow her to be associated with such a scandalous publication.

Enquirer didn't even get the photo right. Just noticed that Doris's image on the cover is reversed (watch and ring worn on right, when she actually wore them on left). Oh, well.

Thanks Michael & Johnny - Doris looks very sweet there, doesn't she?

Here's another interesting one. I bet Doris never thought she'd end up on the cover of Police Gazette!
