This reply is intended for all but especially for Peter Flapper, since you live in the Netherlands.

I just wanted to share that there is a wonderful old hotel in downtown Cincinnati that is called the Netherland Hilton. I believe it was built in 1930 and opened in 1931. It is an elegant hotel with wonderful dining and guest rooms. It's on our National Register of Historic Buildings in the U.S. I had the pleasure of staying there once years ago when I attended a conference at the hotel. It's probably pictured in the current banner above but I don't know which building it is. I googled it in hopes of finding out where the name came from but I had no luck. Perhaps one of you can find out. Here are some pictures of the hotel on this link:
http://www3.hilton.com/en/hotels/ohio/h ... index.html

As far as I know now, I will be going to Cincinnati this Wednesday for the festivities and will be back in touch with you later this week.

The Netherland Plaza Hotel is where Doris performed with Duke Schumann's band in 1938. You're correct, Renie, that the hotel opened in 1931. At that time it was the largest hotel in the U.S., with 800 rooms, 7 restaurants, and 26 private dining rooms. Pretty neat that you got to stay there once!

Renie,

Hope you have a wonderful time at the celebration. I look forward to hearing all about it when you return.

This is a wonderful event in honor of Doris Day and that alone is reason to rejoice.

I am sure this Cincinnati celebration for Doris Day will be a joyous occasion for everyone.

Has anyone seen any coverage of this event on national entertainment programs or talk shows?

I rarely watch television or the entertainment programs, but I did find the article below in Google news.

Since this is a Cincinnati sponsored event, I would think the city's PR person would be reaching out to the media. And it would be great if Doris' publicist did the same in the interest of drawing crowds and public support.

Hi all,

Love the new banner... If someone from way back remembers Doris, it will help to see photo's from that time. Renie thanks for the information on The Netherland Plaza hotel. Great Doris has worked there. Found a photo from years back, again:

Hope everyone attending has a great Day and will share photo's and stories!

Thanks, Johnny. It occurred to me, looking at the photo on the left of the banner, with Doris looking so naturally beautiful, what she meant when she described the Warner Bros makeup artists as 'embalmers'!

Here's a Press release that Mary Anne sent me from Cincinnati council about Wed 27 Sept 2017, entitled:

City Honors Legendary Actress, Singer, & Cincinnati Native Doris Day

https://www.dorisday.net/Doris-Day-Media-Release.pdf

Perhaps people could think of some media outlets or people to forward to?

Yes, you're right, Michael - I must have had a senior moment :? - someone just sent it to me and I mostly listened to the audio on there this time and thought it was new as I hadn't spotted it before. Oh well, it's worth repeating at this stage.

Remembering Doris Day

By JOHN KIESEWETTER • SEP 25, 2017
..."If she was a baseball player or a racehorse, she would have won the Triple Crown," says Bob Maltz, referring to her excellence as a singer, movie star and TV star.

"I was drawn to her by her movies. She was so perky, with those All-America good looks, blonde hair and blue eyes. Then I became a fan of her singing. When I heard her singing 'It's Magic,' I thought she was singing it just to me," says Maltz, a retired ear, nose and throat surgeon who has been a huge Doris Day fan since he was a teen in the 1950s.

As a kid growing up in Cincinnati, Maltz says he might have said that cowboy singer-actor Roy Rogers was the greatest star from Cincinnati – before he saw Day's movies.

"I'd have to say Doris Day is the biggest star. She was prettier than Roy Rogers -- and she could sing better," he says with a laugh.

Day originally thought she'd be a famous dancer with her partner Jerry Doherty. They were planning to move to Hollywood in 1937 until they were injured in a car-train wreck in Hamilton. During her year-long recovery from a severely broken leg, Day turned to singing.

Maltz says that 97-year-old Marian Collins, who was injured in that car wreck with Day, will attend the Cincinnati City Hall ceremony Wednesday.

To hear more stories about Doris Day, tune in "Cincinnati Edition" today at 1 p.m. And to learn more about her, see my "Did Your Family Know Young Doris Day?" blog on Sept. 19."

How wonderful that the lady who was in the car with DD that night in the late 30s is still with us and will attend the event.

Doesn't this lady sound and look marvellous for her great age? All this has put a big smile on my face and it is just heart warming to see all this good and talent and decency in the America of today that is so divided from the top !

Sounds like it's all going well from Cincinnati reports (Doris Day alerts) - but it would be good to get some feedback from anyone who went there.

Thanks for those, Michael - I imagine that was before the council meeting.

Audio of Doris saying 'thank you' on the article link below.

Cincinnati renames street Doris Day Way for homegrown Hollywood star

Wednesday, September 27th 2017, 11:56 pm, CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
Cincinnati has honored a Hollywood star that was born and raised in the Queen City.

The City Council has agreed that Doris Day will have a street named in her honor. Doris Day Way will be the honorary designation of Walnut Street, between Sixth and Seventh streets.

The council also declared Wednesday "Doris Day Day."

The star wasn't able to make it to the ceremony, but she did send an audio message to thank her hometown.

"I was absolutely thrilled to hear that Cincinnati is honoring me with not only my own street, but my own day," said Day. "I couldn't believe it. I miss my hometown and have so many beautiful memories of growing up there. Oh my, I hope that Doris Day Way inspires many happy memories."

The 95-year-old says she's doing well. She lives in Carmel by the Sea, Calif.
