Bryan, it'd be a challenge -- but fun -- to try to choose the winning caption. Just let me know when to do it.

That's great, Judy, thank you. How about the end of today? Don't include me.

Thanks again! :)

Last chance if anyone wants to have another shot - oh, and the brief was 'writing a caption for Doris' (only).

Thanks, Ania - really appreciate that you've stayed with the forum all this time, especially as your first language isn't English. Let's stay with Doris while she's still with at least - and beyond hopefully.

The caption winner by unanimous decision, although Judy had the ultimate choice, is Jas

Thanks to everyone who made the effort, there were lots of good ideas.

Jas, what would you like as a prize? A DVD or CD? Something else?

Oh my - I thank you - Bryan just surprise me - anything will be much appreciated.... to quote a certain lady

"...for me, to be standing here - with this award [whatever it is] - I don't understand it, but I love it..."

Strangely - I know every word to Doris' 1989 Golden Globe acceptance speech.

Sincerely, thanks again.

Well done, Jas! I'll think about surprising you!

I'm off to the coast for a few days - and wanted to get this one in before I go to celebrate the release of DD's first film, Romance on the High Seas, 70 years ago this week. From Puck:

Just discovered, in a 2014 interview by Margaret Barton-Fumo in Film Comment Magazine, a nice quote about Doris' performance in "The Man Who Knew Too Much:"

“Doris Day is incredible in that film. There’s a scene where Jimmy Stewart has to tell her that Hank has been kidnapped and he’s not telling her. She’s like [in Doris Day voice] “Where’s Hank?” [now as Jimmy Stewart] “Oh aahh I’ll tell you about Hank.” And there’s this case that he has, he opens it up, and there’s a hypodermic needle and he takes a sedative. He gives her a pill, and he says “Just take it,” and she says “What’s that?” and she’s wonderful. Her reaction is incredible. I love that film.”
Like Irene Dunne done.

Thank you all - and for your happy holiday wishes - it was only a 5-day break but very enjoyable.
(Jas, I will sort out your 'surprise' in a few days.)

This photo is from almost 70 years ago too (1950):

Image

Original caption:
Screen actress Doris Day compares the whiskers sported by actor Steve Cochran just back from a two weeks’ vacation, and his pet dog named Tschaikowsky in Los Angeles, USA on May 2, 1950. Steve, visiting Doris on the set of “Tea for Two” in Hollywood, forgot about razors during his vacation. (AP Photo)

Image

Doris and Steve Cochran dated for awhile, I believe, having starred together in Storm Warning, apparently his favorite film, of which he said, “To me, one source of satisfaction in playing the role of Hank in Storm Warning was the feeling that I might be making a small contribution toward racial tolerance,” he told the Saturday Evening Post. “As a youngster in Wyoming, I had seen the fiery crosses of the Ku Klux Klan burning near my home and even then I sensed their frightening menace. As Hank in this picture, I had a chance to show how basically shabby such demonstrations are.

Thank you Bryan for featuring Doris and Steve Cochran in this terrific banner. I had not seen this photo before.

I would have liked to see Doris make another film with Steve Cochran. They are a strikingingly attractive couple.

Thank you for the interesting background information on Steve Cochrane.

I am glad to hear Bryan that you had a good break.

I too am so glad Doris had fun with Steve - he was a dish. Am pleased too that Doris played the field a little during this time [before getting serious with Marty] dating the likes of Steve, Ronald Reagan and Jack Carson [as well as seeing her ex when he would come into town].

Thanks, Johnny, she looks as fresh as a spring day there, doesn't she? :)

Jas, re your prize, I was just reading about a film called "Far From Heaven" (2002), starring Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid, a pastiche of the Douglas Sirk / Rock Hudson films. Have you seen it? If not, how about that? It's had very good reviews (never heard of it before I read the article below). It's available on Amazon UK for a very reasonable price. I could order it, copy it and send the DVD to you if that's not being too cheeky?
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0297884/

Truth Through Pastiche... The years of 2002-2003 were pretty great for post-modern homages to Rock Hudson films. Those two years saw the release of Todd Haynes’s moving remix of Douglas Sirk melodramas, Far From Heaven, and Peyton Reed’s Down With Love, a wild and blisteringly funny pastiche of the Rock Hudson and Doris Day sex comedies. Both works play up and sometimes subvert the tropes and typically sanguine nature of their respective genres to make their point, gradually peeling back layers of winking pastiche to reveal a truthful, sincere core...

Far From Heaven is an extraordinary film and a striking visual experience with outstanding performances from Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid , Dennis Haysbert and Patricia Clatkson. Viola Davis is also in the cast. The thoughtful parallels between Far From Heaven and All That Heaven Allows ,(1955) with Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson showcase class distinctions, secret shame, and status. It is a must-see film.

The music score for Far From Heaven is glorious and was the last film scored by the brilliant Elmer Bernstein. The opening piece Autumn In Connecticut is a stellar piece.

Down With Love is an engaging comedy satire on the Doris Day-Rock Hudson films of the 1960's. It has a cleverness but lacks the heart that Pillow Talk and Lover Come has thanks to Doris Day and Rock Hudson's magical chemistry.

Both Rene Zellwegger and Ewan Mc Gregor are very good actors but their chemistry is more intellectual than emotional. Down With Love is an enjoyable film but does not linger in the memory like Pillow Talk, Lover Come Back or Move Over Darling.

The music score in Down With Love is truly enjoyable.

Thank you Bryan for bringing Far From Heaven and Down With Love to our attention.
