I think what I love most about these photos by Bob Willoughby is how natural they are. She's at home, in the backyard, shot in natural light, wearing simple makeup and casual clothes - pure Doris.

Thanks Bryan and Puck for the charming Lullaby of Broadway banner. Who is there today in films like Doris Day and Gene Nelson that dances with such grace and beautiful technical skills?

Thanks Bryan for the iconic, romantic Pillow Talk banner of Doris and Rock at the piano bar singing "Roly Poly". Who can forget pianist Perry Blackwell singing "You Lied", and the look on Rock's face?
This is a beautiful banner to welcome the first day of spring tomorrow.

Thanks, Johnny & Puck. "The look of Love" came to mind, seeing that banner image of Doris & Rock. :)

Here's a couple by Bob Willoughby of Rock visiting Doris on the set of Midnight Lace

The Bob Willoughby Midnight Lace on-set photos of Doris and Rock capture the genuine heartfelt friendship. They are really special.

Everyone who has friendships like this in their lives is well blessed.

Thanks so much Bryan!

The PT banner captures Doris at the peak of her superstardom and beauty. She entered goddess territory at that point and remained on top well into the mid-sixties.

One of many things that made this particular scene work so well was the bond between Doris and Rock. That undefinable chemistry they shared and their knack for breaking each other up. You can see Doris almost break character when he adds the phony Texas twang on the "I call her .." line in the song. Pure magic. Pure talent. True friendship.

Thanks for another wonderful banner, Mr. James.

LOVE the on set photos of Rock visiting Doris on the ML set.

The Bob Willoughby photos prove that Doris and Rock adored each other. What they shared is very rare and we are fortunate to have these glimpses into their magical friendship.

Thanks again,
Michael

Thanks, guys, appreciate your comments as always.

As someone who's worked as a photographer myself, I really love Bob Willoughby's work. You can see that he'd earned Doris' trust, essential for taking the photos that he created.

Here's a couple more from Midnight Lace:

I love the composition - couldn't get the whole height on the banner, which is more evident here:

Thanks Bryan for the Midnight Lace banner.

Out of all of Doris Day's films, the cinematography in Midnight Lace is mesmerizingly beautiful. It captures the ongoing suspenseful mood of the story and Doris' timeless elegance and beauty.

Interesting photos. Very moody, noir-ish, angles. I like the one on the left best.

Has the one on the right been photoshopped? Her blouse looks blurry to me.

To Johnny's point - Russell Metty was the cinematographer on ML. He was one of the best, working with likes of John Huston, Orson Welles, Stanley Kubrick and Douglas Sirk. Metty's camera and the superb art direction and set decoration gave the film a lush, glam look. ML needed strong visuals because it was based on a stage play and was therefore rather set bound. The camera work, lighting, and decor along with the eye catching costumes by Irene were key elements to the enjoyment of the film.

Thank you Michael for the background on Midnight Lace cinematographer Russell Metty. From the opening sequence with Doris walking through the park in the London fog, the audience was hooked by the mystery thriller.

Film composer Frank Skinner must be acknowledged for his eerie score for Midnight Lace. He created lush scores for Imitation of Life, Portrait In Black, Back Street and Madame X.

Midnight Lace was number 19 on the top earning list of 1961, earning $3,500,000.

All banners are 'Photoshopped', Michael - have to get them to fit, make adjustments and put text on them. In this case, the original images were smaller so that may have blurred one slightly.
