I’ve often compared the assembled footage from Something’s Got To Give with the finished version of Move Over, Darling and found Doris’ version to be funnier and far more energized than Marilyn’s. But I’ve come to realize that really isn’t fair because someone at the studio compiled what they had from the various takes and did the best they could to give us a glimpse into what the Marilyn film was like. The director, George Cukor, had no say in this or any opportunity to choose which takes were used. In total, I think it amounts to only one third of the total film.

True, Bryan, they were very different offscreen as well as onscreen. Marilyn is someone whose myth far outlasted her real life, whereas Doris has outlived nearly all of her contemporaries.

Thanks Michael for your comparisons and perspective on Something's Got To Give and Move Over Darling.

I do believe Marilyn and Dean Martin would have had great screen chemistry but I am unsure about Cyd Charisse in the Bianca role.

Both Doris and Marilyn had a devout fan base that supported their films. The director for Something's Got To Give was the brilliant George Cukor who directed The Philadelphia Story, Born Yesterday and My Fair Lady.

In summary, fate and circumstances brought about Move Over Darling which became very successful.

It would be interesting to see how the funny Swedish massage scene would have worked with Marilyn and Cyd Charrise.

Peter, what a great hi res photo that is. The clarity and colors are amazing. Thank you.

Johnny, I wonder if the Swedish massage scene was in the Marilyn script. Ditto the car wash scene. If they were, they never filmed them and I've never seen a copy of the SGTG script on EBAY or other resale sites. I think Marilyn posed as the kid's nanny, not a masseuse, in the version I saw. Another key difference is that Nick and Bianca actually go on a honeymoon in Marilyn's version. The first wife does not interrupt the proceedings. It appears the husband / Dean Martin has um.... performance issues.... on the honeymoon and I don't think he knew about Ellen being alive until after they returned home and he catches her swimming nude in the pool. MOD handled all of that differently with Doris following the couple to Monterey and interrupting their romantic plans. I think MOD is much funnier in the way Doris kept after Garner to tell Bianca what was going on.

The stark contrast in acting and in their personas - is in how they performed the Swedish nurse/nanny- very different!

I agree with Jas. This is great fun. If Doris wore purple in her films, I cannot recall it. That is a brilliant color choice for this banner. This would have been an ideal poster for the film itself.

Bravo, Bryan!

I love this Move Over Darling banner. The muted colours make it look so interesting and unusual.
Michael wondered if Doris ever wore purple in her films. This is a great quiz question for forum members.

The amused expression on Doris' face as one shoe dangles off her foot gives a her look of confidence. Doris wearing purple makes her a standout.

The caption is hilarious.

Move Over Darling is a delight.

Thank you Bryan.

I don't recall whether she ever wore purple in films, but do remember a really striking publicity photo for her TV show (in 1974?) in which she is clad in purple. Very becoming indeed.

Not sure, but I think she wore a purple suit in "Lover, Come Back." JAMES?

Doris wore a lavender bathing suit and hat in Lover Come Back but I haven't found anything else from LCB that is purple. Not yet anyway.
