Doris and NARAS

Unread post by Musiclover »

It's not news, at least to most on this forum, that Doris's vocal talent has been underrated. Besides her recordings, however, she made another contribution to the music industry that is also rarely acknowledged. I had forgotten about it until recently when doing some research about music of the 1950s, and thought this may be of interest:

In 1957, 10 representatives from the five major record labels (Columbia, Capitol, RCA, MGM, and Decca) comprised a committee whose duty it was to create an organization that would recognize outstanding achievements in the recording industry. Doris was the only female -- and the only vocalist -- on that committee. After almost two years of planning, that group of music professionals (which included Paul Weston and Axel Stordahl, also from Columbia Records) founded the National Academy of Recordings Arts & Sciences. It is, of course, better known to the general public as the Recording Academy, the organization that bestows Grammy awards.

Since Wikipedia is such a popular source, I added some of this to its background information for NARAS. It will be interesting to see if that addition remains.

That Doris's participation in the Academy's formation is not common knowledge is another example of her being unsung (excuse the pun) in an important capacity. I don't think it was even mentioned in her memoir.

That is huge! The equivalent of being on the board of the Academy Awards! And yet it took the Grammy's quite some time to give her one. Go figure.
