Lauren, I'm told (by Katie!) suggested setting up a section to cover Doris Day recordings. I'm happy with that! As I had an hour or so to kill, I thought I'd start the ball rolling with one of my favourite 'old' Doris Day songs "No Moon at All":
I've made a sneaky link to buy through the website but my main reason for posting it is that it was completely unknown to me until Lloyd K Jessen sent it to me a few years ago. I've just come across another fab 'lesser know' track, which I'll post soon.
Does anyone know any of the history of this song?
Happy listening! Bookmark the page and you can listen to it in the background.
Hot picture of her,Bryan!I adore the song,I didn't know she sang it,either.I'll look up history on the song and post again later. This is the coolest forum on the web!!!This is going to be the page on the forum I'll visit most often, since singing Doris is my favorite subject when it comes to her.
I love Doris singing, it makes my Day. There's a song for every mood. I love too much too discus here. My all time favorite's are: Love him and move over darling. But there are much more. I love to listen to this lady. A DAY without Doris is a bad DAY.
Yes, I must admit that Doris' singing voice is 50% of her attraction for me. Let's admit it, the American public (and the whole world followed) weren't wrong when they voted her a singing star with songs like "Sentimental Journey" back in the 1940s.
Her early pre-Hollywood singing was close to Billy Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, etc. Who knows what would have happened if she hadn't been snapped up by Hollywood. Elvis and others made a mess of it, movie wise, but Doris mangaged to be a real singer througout her film career with gems like "Duet", "Latin for Lovers", "I Have Dreamed" (is that the album title? - you know the songs - Howard's favourite album! and one of mine) and so many more independent musical projects she did as well as recording sound tracks.
I think Doris without her voice is like Laurel without Hardy. We can have a great time here talking about our favourites. I've started off with "No Moon at All" - we could say "Song for January" - what should be "Song for February"?
This will be fun...It will be interesting to discuss her music because I'm guessing that most of us listen to Doris more than we watch her -- it's much easier to pop in a CD while doing other things than to sit and watch an 1 1/2 movie during your daily routine!
One of her old Les songs that I like best is Long Ago and Far Away from the lost treasures CD.........
One of the last songs that she recorded that I love is Faded Summer Love...maybe some people may not care for this one as much because it's so slow-- but I love it.
I am so enjoying the songs of Doris Day that have been added to your website; however, I have only been able to get to the song pages via the forum. At times I forget which message contained which link to the songs. Have you added a "song" link on the main website? Have I just missed it?
Thank you again for all your hard work. I visit at least once a week to catch up on what is new in the Day World.
Hi TJ - no there aren't any links from the main website, I'm afraid, as we are kind of making this up as we go along - but you can always bookmark the pages if you want to revisit. I'm trying to keep them all in this section. Glad you are enjoying them!
It seems that everybody and his grandfather recorded this song. Everybody from Julie London, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Jeri Sothern, etc.
If you're in the mood for a jazzy Day ... her album entitled "Duet" with Andre Previn is considered to be one of her best. Also, earlier in her recording career, the "Young Man With a Horn" soundtrack is wonderful with the great Harry James playing trumpet. Happy listening!
Also, the radio recordings circa 1953 are some of the jazziest and most brilliant things Miss Day has done [my humble opinion] - stuff that rates with the jazz greats [jazz is my dish]! Listen to "Everything I have is yours", "Don't Worry Bout Me", "I gotta sing away these blue" - to name a few!
Yes, I agree, the album "Duet" is a classy act. Also, wish they would re-release Doris and Robert Goulet's "Annie get your gun" - once again Doris shows her renditions top the lot - I truly think she leaves Judy and Betty [Hutton] in the shade here, and the original Annie, Ethel, a voice I could never take to - just shouting to me!
My favourite season is here, time for "Autumn Leaves" - however, did Doris ever record any of the following: -
Doris Day - Les Brown - "There I Go" (Live Performance at Glen Island Casino on Oct. 25, 1940)
Doris Day - Les Brown - "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time"
Doris Day - Les Brown - "I've Got the Sun in the Morning"
Thanks for posting all those tunes and recommendations. Especially like the humorous title "My Sugar Is So Refined". Reminds me of other clever titles: "I'd Rather Have You Under The Moon Than Anyone Under The Sun", or "It's Over Because We're Through" (not Doris Day recordings).
Is it true that Ms. Day recorded with Johnny Ray? He's another one of my favorite pop singers who could also sing jazz. I didn't know "The Weeper" did any duets.
Thanks for directing me to the "clips" section. There's a lot of great material there. I eventually found the "Ma Said, Pa Said" clip at Google. If that wasn't the one you made, please let me know. What a nice duet.
Take a look at this. It can be confusing, but it, supposedly is based on Billboard's Charts, current and all-time. Look at how they have Doris Day ranked in relation to other artists. They have them all mixed up, as far as type of music is concerned and some recent artists are ranked higher than others who have been charting for years. Hard to believe that Madonna can rank above Frank Sinatra.
Looking at charts like that from Billboard is misleading. They didn't begin weekly album charts until 1956, so older albums (like early Day, Sinatra, etc.) are not included to the degree that later artists (like Streisand and Madonna) are. Also, they had split charts for a few years for Stereo albums vs. Mono albums, so albums that appeared in both formats (i.e. Day By Night) show split figures.
It's hard to track hits going back to the 30's or early 40's because different mags used different criteria, Cashbox, Downbeat, etc. To guage Doris' hits, you'd need to go by all the mags, not just Billboard. For instance, that list is missing her two longest charting #1's: "Sentimental Journey" (9 weeks) and "My Dreams Are Getting Better All The Time" (7 weeks), which would drastically raise her ranking.
Thanks for the info about the charts - I was never sure when and how all the numbers were calculated. I have been enthralled with DD's early music for a long time. I love No Moon At All , Again , I'm Confessin - could go on and on and on !! I just don't understand why she doesn't get the recognition she so rightly deserves for her vast music catalog ( not to mention her movies !). How many people have been #1 in the boxoffice while having a complete career in the music business going on at the same time ?? No one that I can think of. She had two successful and complete careers going on simultaneously ! Amazing ! She was fantastic !!
