Let's Get Physical

Unread post by jmichael »

Doris was a master at slapstick comedy. Although she was equally adept at getting laughs with a funny line, she also knew how to handle slapstick and sight gags. She had the knack for making each of these moments seem totally spontaneous.

Here are my top 5 choices:

1) MOD: the carwash scene.
2) TGBB: getting her foot stuck in the trash can with Dom DeLuise and that infamous banana creme pie.
3) TP: after Clark Gable plants a kiss in her office, she rustles the papers from the table and hysterically buckles at the knees. Classic moment.
4) THOIA; when she falls backward into the tomatoes.
5) LCB: when she jumps out of bed and screams realizing she's only wearing the top half of Rock's pajamas.

Now what have I overlooked?

more slapstick

In SMNF - getting locked out of her house. She's very funny as she tries to re-enter holding millk, eggs, etc. Her facial expressions and physical movements are priceless! Director Norman Jewison was so impressed with DD during this scene that he added more slapstick for her to do.

I don't know if this is exactly slapstick, but I love the scene in "Calamity Jane" when she sits on a chair and Howard Keel pulls it, while she is singing "The deadwood stage", I think.
I love the expression of her face!

Agree the scene on the front porch with the carton of eggs was great.

I also just remembered the scene in Caprice underneath the deck trying to get that lock of hair. Pretty demanding physical comedy and she pulled it off with typical flair. That was about the only scene I enjoyed in that movie.

this is really old, but once again, I wanted to put in my two cents...

I love the scene when she's drunk in TTOM

I love when the trash can/pie scene in TGBB

And I really love when she's dancing and those powder things fall out of her dress in OMB

How about the massage Polly Bergen gets in MOD !

And in TGBB the scene in the boat when Rod gets knocked out and it's out of control. Watch that closely - she's perfect as always !

The ones that jmichael listed first are classic !

She could be "physical" just singing a song, sometimes--back in the day (even if she was lip-syncing)...

One of the best examples can be seen in Lullaby of Broadway's "It Was Just One of Those Things". If you haven't seen this youTube, check it out..

Totally physical, head to toe.. face, hands, everything..
