Is this Doris? I cannot be sure

Unread post by Bjorn » 16 Dec 2013, 07:22

As I stated in my introduction thread yesterday, I am a big fan of Dodo as well as photographer Elliott Erwitt. He has taken quite a few pictures of celebrities, but I had to look long and hard for a photo of Doris. I think I might have found one, but I'm not 100% sure (no characteristic smile in this photo). Hope some of you can give me a second opinion. Thanks!

You can click the image to see it in a larger size on the website of Elliott Erwitt's agency Magnum Photos. If it helps, the man with his hand on her shoulder is Liberace, and the photo was taken in 1957 in Las Vegas.

Glad to hear that, now at least I know. Thank you! The search for a picture of Doris taken by Elliott Erwitt continues. :)

I can see why you might think that it was Doris, Bjorn. But I concur with the others that it's not Doris. It looks like Danny Thomas and Danny Kaye in the photo, however, but not sure of that either.

I don't think it's even close. Cannot place the face, however.

Looks like Danny Thomas (I'm sure of it) and I think the other fellow is Liberace.

I agree. Definitely not Doris.

And on that note, here is an ebay item that is being offered, and the seller is convinced it's Doris and Rock. I gently tried to assure them that it is neither, but they were unmoved.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1950-Pepsi-Cola ... TQ:US:1123

This was our exchange (their last comment gets me...that it IS them):

Me: I'm curious as to why you think that's Doris Day and Rock Hudson? At first glance, I suppose I can understand why someone might think that, but upon closer inspection, it really doesn't look like them, and I see nothing on the sign that indicates that it is them.

Them: Because it comes from the early fifties when a lot of the movie stars were doing adds for soda companies. Coca Cola had Jane Wyman, Tarzan(Johnny W?) and others. I've had Ronald Reagan posters for Shaving cream advertisement. It Comes from that time and it is them. Thanks for looking and asking.

You are correct. It is not D and R. Where on that page can we post a message to him?

Under the "Description" tab, you will see a line in bold letters that reads: "Questions and answers about this item", and directly under that is a link which reads "Ask a question". Follow that link.
