2014 Doris pictures
Re: 2014 Doris pictures
Barbara - Marty probably was bored because it was at a screening for something he was not associated with. (Meowwww, did I say that?)
It was a screening of "Portrait in Black" at the Screen Directors and Doris went as a favor to Ross Hunter who was the producer.

Re: 2014 Doris pictures
Dorine- great picture of Doris arriving at her party.
Paul- wonder if Lana would have been at this screening - being the star of Portrait in Black? Always wondered if she and Doris ever met. Doris cited Lana and Joan Collins in a 1983 interview about a "comeback" saying she wanted to play sexy parts and there was no reason why she couldn't as other stars of her generation were flying the flag, she cited Joan Collins [Dynasty probably] and Lana [probably due to her appearances in Falcon Crest in the early 1980s].

Yes, Lana was there. (As well as Sandra Dee, Anna May Wong and John Gavin).
When you signed to do a Ross Hunter picture, part of the contract stipulated that you had to attend the premiere of the picture. It was one of the throwbacks to Hollywood's past that Ross Hunter was insistent upon. The ONLY movie premieres that Doris Day attended for her own pictures between 1959 and 1968 were: "Pillow Talk", "Midnight Lace", "The Thrill of it All" (all Ross Hunter productions) and one non-Hunter production, "Do Not Disturb" at which they held the Look Alike contest because Fox didn't have a lot of confidence in the film and felt it needed some kind of boost.
She had planned to attend the August, 1968 world premiere of "Eggroll" at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston but Marty's passing in April of that year, changed that.
The story arc that Aaron Spelling had planned for Miss Day's role on "Dynasty" was for about a dozen episodes and would have allowed her to play a very feisty character. She was to be the older sister of Linda Evan's character, who comes to Denver to take on Alexis (Collins) who has been mistreating her sister. IN the process Blake (John Forsythe) falls for her because she has all of Krystle's qualities and more, and before the Carrington marriage can be rattled, a Texas Oilman arrives on business and he and the Doris Day character fall in love and she returns with him to Texas.
This was to have been the original storyline for Rock Hudson but when Doris Day declined to join the show, despite being sent some gorgeous Nolan Miller design sketches, Hudson's part was re-written with him falling for Krystle, in what was his last acting role before his untimely passing.
According to the late Warren Cowan who repped Miss Day for many years, it never got beyond discussions and some tentative talks.

Paul, I love your "back stories!"
Sinem, was this possibly an excerpt from Metronome magazine?

Re: 2014 Doris pictures
Paul this is the photo I was talking about, and yes it is plain to see how bored Marty looks. And you probably hit the nail on the head for the reason you gave.
I always enjoy your post, you always give information many of us, like me did not know. I for one, would have loved to see Doris do a spin on Dynasty, I guess she was just so use to being told by Marty what to do, that after his death she just bowed out of everything. Such a shame, she still looked great. I think she turned down lots of roles and scripts, now looking back she says she doesn't know why she retired so early, that she really enjoyed her work.

Re: 2014 Doris pictures
Thanks Barbara and I return the compliment as you always bring great insight and photos too that are greatly enjoyed. Thank you and I totally agree with your comments.
I really think that after the hard work of doing the series for 5 years and then the equally challenging work involved in working with A.E. Hotchner on her book and reliving her entire life, as well as the years spent battling Rosenthal, that a break was certainly in order. Had she not become involved with Barry Comden, however, I think she'd have explored some opportunities as they were presented, by the latter 70's. Having met the man several times, it was apparent that he was jealous of her great success or threatened by it and imposed, what Miss Day's dear friend Rack Rael noted as a "Fortress mentality" - keeping her away from people and opportunities because of his own insecurities. Had he not happened into her life, I think she would have continued reveling in her life in Los Angeles which was so apparent in pictures taken at the many, many events she willingly attended - far more than she ever attended while married to Marty. She always avoided premieres and Hollywood events but seemed to have a great time attending the 1973 opening of Ross Hunter's "Lost Horizon" and the opening of "Good News", "Benji", "Once is Not Enough", to name only a handful.

Paul - as always: thank you so much for the wealth of information, I just love reading about it all - yes that would have been some Dynasty story and a great reunion for Doris and Rock!

Re: 2014 Doris pictures
What a lovely picture Sinem. As for Marty looking bored, there are many of those...
Quite some information there Paul, for which many thanks, somehow Doris did not accept any actingpart anymore after "eggroll".She had 8 weeks to recover from Martys dead and the loss of her money to start the DD-show.After that she sais she felt so tired, but it would have been great to see Rock and Doris team up again in Dallas. It was not meant to be.

Love that latest picture from the opening party/premiere of Ross Hunter's 1973 musical, "Lost Horizon". It was Terry's first public outing after his accident the previous year and he used a cane when escorting his mom.
Almost everyone in Hollywood was in attendance and according to Dorothy Manners, the columnist who had taken over Louella Parson's column, "....the crowd went absolutely wild when Doris Day, a vision in pink, stepped out of a limo, beaming her world famous smile for the thousands of fans and almost as many flashbulbs that captured the moment......."

Love that last shot of Doris with Terry. Thanks for posting it.
Like Irene Dunne done.
Re: 2014 Doris pictures
So do I Howard, really love the expression on Doris' face - having wonderful special fun with her boy.
Re: 2014 Doris pictures
This photo looks like the same event, every time I see them together my heart hurts for her. They were so close, especially after Marty's death. She has had so much pain and loss in her life. No wonder she clings to her beloved pets. But also has lost so many of them as well.

Here's one I never saw on the Internet before. Doris is at Hugh Hefner's mansion in conjunction with an animal charity event:

Re: 2014 Doris pictures
Nice picture Howard. This was taken in September, 1975 at the Playboy Mansion. Hugh Hefner hosted an Actors and Others event called, "Wine Country Safari" which raised a great amount of money for the organization and received a lot of press coverage. To say that Mr. Hefner was "mesmerized" by Miss Day would be an understatement.
I was fortunate enough to attend the event along with several hundred others, and it was a gorgeous September day for a wonderful cause.

It's easy to see why he was "mesmerized." She not only looked gorgeous that day, but very sexy too!
Like Irene Dunne done.
