A couple of excerpts from a January 20, 1961 story in the Hollywood Reporter, entitled, "Doris Day Foot-Printing Revives Glamour Days at Grauman's Chinese"
The ghost of Hollywood's legendary glamour stalked the forecourt of the Grauman's Chinese Theatre yesterday drawing the largest turnout of press, photographers and people for the traditional "footprint" ceremony since it was first started by the late Sid Grauman back in 1927. Doris Day graphically portrayed the reason she has been consistently named in recent years as the Number One Star of the picture business, by exhibitors and public, by being the magnet for the biggest gathering in the history of this event.
"....Clark Gable in 1937 drew the biggest crowd until today, but Doris Day far outstripped that gathering>"
Thank you for posting this picture. Thank you Paul for the info about the hand/foot printing. This information is not surprising because she is the greatest celebrity the entertainment world has ever known. Her influence is far reaching as well as her fan base. God blessed us when He gave us Doris. I am so thankful He did.
I always told Howard he looks like one of Doris's co-stars in his pictures with her. They should have made three DorisDay/HowardGreen movies like she did with Rock.
More fabulous photographs, thanks for sharing all.
Lauren - i have the audios somewhere - from the 1987 Convention - Doris talked about Gertrude Wheeler there- saying she hated those hair dos, and how Gertrude was so precise and would pop from behind scenery/wherever, calling a halt to filming if one hair was out of place. DD also talked about her hair [then] the short do- and how it was so easy to do and was ideal for the climate in Carmel - when she arrived she said something along the lines of "it's a lovely Day..' referring to the weather and the joy/ love surrounding her- the crowd [you, Howard, Ray and many others] applauded - and D became slightly embarassed saying "I didn't mean that.." [i.e. refererring to herself].
During the chat, Doris was also asked which female singers of her era she liked singing, i think she mentioned Ella, Peggy Lee and June Christy- someone asked her if she liked Anita O'Day and she replied she did, a lady asked if she was related to Anita O'Day- which caused laughter.
Re-Howard and DD- that would have been a nice combination in films.
Jas~
I had no idea that you were there in Carmel at that wonderful time when Doris appeared and spoke to use for nearly an hour. After that, she stayed even longer in order to meet every fan personally and to accept gifts that each person brought to her. Thankfully, she had Connie Edney there to help her with all of the gifts with name tags on them. Meg was there, also. And dear Don Chang, who got a great big kiss from her!
Here is a photo of Doris arriving. She is on video tape saying that she was nervous! Can you imagine?/

No Lauren, I was not in Carmel at the Convention - I was not as lucky as you and others -
I obtained audios of the convention though from the DD Society at that time - on tapes- that's how old they are lol - however I played them a lot and remember quite a bit of what was said. It was great even just to hear DD talk to her friends and fans.
Jas~
I'm sure that everyone there would have loved to have you and the other fans on Bry's forum at the Convention. This was back in the day (1987) before computers so everything had to be done by paper - remember those days? Mike Doyle sent out a newsletter to members, which had to do with trading Doris' videos and records back in those days. By 1987, he and the DJ, from Philadelphia (Doris' close friend), sponsored that Convention. If that happened today, we would have several hundred fans at the Convention because we could have reached more people.
Doris just could not have been nicer. She spoke to use for a long time and was a gentle, kind, and considerate person.
