My pleasure, Johnny.

Jas, too bad the book didn't include the very memorable and slinky full length dress that Ray Aghayan designed for Do Not Disturb.

Peter,

These 27 photos of Doris' wardrobe tests are captivating.
Besides the costumes, there is so much information on the description boards that is really interesting. I noticed the photo for the film Alexander, Big League which I assume was a title considered for The Winning Team.

The notation on Young At Heart board says wrong shoes.

I had not seen a board before indicating makeup test as there is for Star Lift.

Seeing the dates on the boards gives more information on the film pre-production which is helpful. These boards tell a story about Doris' films. In many of the photos, Doris has a contemporary look that would work today.

Thank you Peter for all these great photos. Have a great weekend!
Johnny

Musiclover- Yes I agree and was surprised they did not use the clothes from Do Not Disturb in particular in the book - just Caprice- wasn't DND 20th Century Fox too?

Peter- wow! What magnificent pictures- I am in awe! I particularly love the ones from Move Over Darling and the discarded outfits - wonder why? And changing the shoe shopping [for Adam] outfit with variety of hats- oh, and of course, real hair- much better.

Thank you so much for these gems. This could be a book in itself- of stars and their costume /hair/make up tests - shows you how much thought goes into a screen outfit- heard Edith Head talking once about colour [even in black and white] and of course, character, movement, etc. Joan Crawford said that in a really dramatic scene, Adrian [costume designer] went ultra simple with the gown so as not to take away from the scene, and then in other scenes, gave her really show stopping outfits.

Yes, DND was a Fox picture, as was Move Over, Darling. Smart attire in both.

I think that a compliment from Edith Head, who designed wardrobes for a huge number (more than 500) of films and TV shows, really said a lot: "Doris was the easiest star I ever worked with."

Agree with the positive reactions to the costume shots and, as Jas mentioned, I would love to know why some of these didn't make it into the films. Also fascinating the pre-production dates and how much time elapsed before the films were released. It appears that Caprice finished filming a year before it was released and DND was probably completed in early 1965 before its release that Christmas. Also obvious is the choice to make Doris look more Marilyn Monroe-ish in MOD - in the wardrobe tests, she is wearing the Beverly Boyer style bob, yet she went with platinum blonde wigs for the most part in the film. One other thing to note about her costumes on the three films she did at 20th: Ray Aghayan designed her clothes in Caprice and DND, but Moss Mabry was the costume designer on MOD.

Great detective work, Peter, as always. So much appreciated.

Have always found Moss Mabry's costumes for MOD to be by far the least inspiring designed for Doris during her high fashion years.

Notice too from the Caprice costume tests that the character was originally called "Phyllis" - not "Patricia/Phillipa."

Great pics Ania, really show off the beauty of Crescent Drive- that Doris loved. Lovely too - to see DD in black.

Ania,
The picture of Doris in black sweater is so sophisticated and beautiful. It reminds me of a similar picture of Audrey Hepburn.
The photos of Doris next to the pool look like they are from That Touch of Mink era.
Thanks so much Ania!
