In David Kaufman's book on Doris Day it states that it was Director Norman Jewison's idea to cast James Garner as Doris' husband in The Thrill of It All. Garner is described as, "The virile Garner - with a Clark Kent chin, complete with cleft-- was born on April 28 -1928, making him six years Day's junior. He would prove every bit as natural a screen mate for Day as Rock Hudson. Though Garner was hardly know for his work in comedies, Jewison said he had detected his "comic presence", in TV's lighthearted western Maverick. Offscreen Day engaged in the same kind of playful games with Garner that she had with Hudson. "On the set we do takeoffs on the folks back home", Garner explained while they were shooting the picture. "She calls me Al and I call her Sylvia-honey".

This screen chemistry between Doris Day and James Garner sparkles throughout the very entertaining and smart The Thrill of It All.
