Okay, I know it's supposed to be Jake Iverson's turn, but I thought I'd jump in here in the meantime. This is one for film buffs.

There is a story to this, Doris related in a couple of ways, but it isn't necessarily a "what happened" kind of story. Can anyone spot what the story is? It's there to see...

(Since it's hard to shrink a CinemaScope image down and see everything, I'm also including another shot from a bit later in the party scene as well.)

This is a tough one! In the first image it looks like Doris and whoever are being filmed against a backdrop, could the story be she wasn't there? No that doesn't sound like I'm on the right track....

Is it something to do with the band? Did Terry Melcher write the music? No, I didn't think so...

The only other thing I notice is that the decorated 'trees' are not in the first shot with Doris. Did she complain that they weren't being watered or something? :)

I think you are right, Bryan.

On the first pictures there are no pilars (?) on the left but a wall. On the buttom picture there are pilars on both sides and the room is much wider?

Or is it just shot from a different angle?

Does this have to do with another movie that was filmed on the same set?

Excellent Barb!!! Yes, studios used to do that pretty frequently to save some money. Can you name the famous film that was filmed on this set?

Was it "The Sound of Music?"
Like Irene Dunne done.

Very good, Howard!! :D

Yes, after The Sound of Music finished principal photography, it's main set was slightly altered and redressed to become the ballroom of the hotel set for Do Not Disturb. So while Doris didn't play Maria von Trapp, she did get to play in the Trapp villa...

Also, in a similar vein, Warners had a big hit in 1953, separate from our dear Doris' rollicking western musical. It was a 3-D movie, and Vincent Price's first horror film, called House of Wax. In it 2 characters go out to the "14 Street Music Hall" but lo and behold... they're in the Golden Garter Saloon (gonna whet their whistles today!)...

That's pretty neat how they can reuse sets!

I think this topic is worth continuing with if possible.

What year were these pics taken and what was Doris doing?:

Well, I'd say 1953 and she was recording the songs for Calamity Jane.

But it's funny - I actually thought about this topic a couple days ago...

Hehe..:D

Hmmm. Are you sure that is wrong?

On the first picture the conductor is "working" and on the second it shows Allyn McLerie (is that spelled correctly?) in the background?

Then they are at least discussing a scene/practicing it?

Actually you may be right, Marion - the caption I have says the photo was taken in 1957 but if that is (the back of) Allyn McLerie it must be 1953 and it must be a recording session for 'Calamity' - perhaps 'A Woman's Touch'?

Bryan- using my 'Dorishairdar' - which I am usually 100% correct on - the pics are definately 1953- around Calamity Jane. Remember in 1952 Doris' hair was as it is on the posters for April in Paris. She cut it short in '54 - Young at Heart - and still had this hairstyle in 1957- around Pajama Game time.

What's going on here and why is Doris looking fed-up?

Hi
I have that pic and at some stage must have copied the caption that came with it and it reads.....

1st June 1954 Doris Day sits at a bar, resting her head on her hand and looking depressed, during a SHARE Boomtown Benefit at the El Mocambo Nightclub, Hollywood, CA

Hope that helps :)

Thanks Shohre! (love your new avatar!)

Poor Doris - it's very rare to see her looking depressed. The woman next to her seems to be wondering what's up - and Marty seems to be enjoying himself in the background (wonder if they had a fight?!)

Must find a new item for here soon.
