Greetings All as One,
Great info here. Does anyone know of documentation of the relationship between D Day and Ernest S. Holmes, founder of Religious Science/Science of Mind? I have yet to read any books about Doris, but have always loved her movies! Thanks.

Re: Booklist for DayReaders
My friend Al is a snowbird from Connecticut and will be back here in florida next month was in a bookstore tonight in New Haven Ct., and saw Doris Day Books. The man who runs the store said he wrote two of the books. It turned out to be Pierre Patrick!!! Al said his friend Ray Lyons met Doris and Pierre said he knew me well and that he was with Doris in Carmel for her birthday this year and she is doing very well. What a small world!!!

Re: Booklist for DayReaders
There is a need for more literature on Doris. I still do not think we have captured the essence of this woman.
We are left wondering "what is a day in her life like?". I have been told she can be quite business like and I am sure that is true... but there is no inkling of this in her literature. They have taken the grocery run for her life!
We are left with a disconnect - one moment she is charming people, and the next she is throwing an effigy of her husband in a tree! I imagine she sometimes is somewhat like she in in her films - sweet, even sentimental, but also irascible. It is all these qualities that make her interesting.

"As long as its show business, I'm happy." One of these days, I am going to quit smoking these things.

Re: Booklist for DayReaders
I agree Gerard; Doris Day the real (not reel) person has to be many things and not all sweetness and light (though I am sure she is a wonderful, kind, respectful and caring person)!
She is obviously somewhat complex (as probably all big stars are and indeed, as most people are! ) = she is obviously /was/ obviously a very vivacious, sensual and sexy lady too - and not virginal at all- just listen to this lady's voice in her recordings - that is one sexy woman who has loved and known about it!
The complexities (for me) make Doris even more interesting and certainly do not detract! I am certainly not one of those fans/friends who want to put Doris on a pedestal as some kind of Saint - although for the work she has done for animals - she is certainly way up there for me as a true caring amazing woman who has used her fame wisely and to great effect for the innocent animals.

I totally agree with Howard. Start with reading her own story in her own words and then go from there.

Re: Booklist for DayReaders
I go with Doris and her own take. HER OWN STORY is the best one out there. After that, Tom Santopietro does an amazing job and is not derogatory in any way. Eric Braun and Michael Freedland have also done marvelous jobs.
Most of the others are far too opinionated, and some are downright insulting.

Re: Booklist for DayReaders
I went to the library yesterday. Was specially there to find her bio written by Doris herself. No luck, however I went "OOOOOH! YAY!" when I spotted 'Considering Doris Day' and issued that pretty fast (hahaha
)
Haven't read it yet. Disappointed in the lack of pics in it though :/. I'm not really much of a reader myself, I used to but I have to really get into a book to read it properly and not 'skip' most of it. If it is written up like a historical document, then I will not get into it. I have a book about Susan Boyle and it is completely awful...I got up to page 60 and all it was, was just a mish-mash of newspaper articles opinions! I was completely bored stiff!

Re: Booklist for DayReaders
Thank you Peter, Cranhill and Puck for all the information on the Doris Day booklists. I can't believe that after eight years with this forum that I did not see these lists.
I am keen to read more books on Doris' films, in particular, on Midnight Lace, Love Me Or Leave Me, Julie, Teacher's Pet, Move Over Darling and Caprice. It is interesting to read what Doris and her co-stars say about their experiences working on the films. I also appreciate information from the Directors, Costume Designers and Cinematographers.
The casting decisions and stories are also fascinating and are of major interest to me.
Thanks again.

Re: Booklist for DayReaders
I received three books on Doris Day that I ordered from Amazon. ca. to add to my collection.
They are: My " Secret Love" Affair With Doris Day by Michael De Vita.
The Life of Doris Day -American Legends -by Charles Rivers Editors
Day At A Time by Mary Anne Barothy
I know Mary Anne is a member of this forum and I want you to know I am really excited to read this book.
I am so looking forward to exploring these books this summer and discovering gems that I will be happy to share with the Doris Day Forum members. I feel this is one way to keep Doris close.
My summer reading list also includes:
Reckless Daughter - A Portrait of Joni Mitchell
All That Heaven Allows - A Biography of Rock Hudson
A Return To love by Marianne Williamson
I hope everyone is having a pleasant summer.

Hi Peter,
I found The Life of Doris Day - American Legends - by Charles Rivers on Amazon. It is more a magazine than a book with little new information. it is nice to have it in my collection.
I am just starting to read Mary Anne Barothy's book, Day At A Time, which I am really enjoying. I would recommend it. I found it on Amazon.
Good luck!

Re: Booklist for DayReaders
Just finished reading a newly-released book entitled "Goddess and the Girl Next Door: Marilyn Monroe, Doris Day and the Movie they Shared" by John William Law. Nothing we don't already know - naturally, it's a comparison because Doris took over Marilyn's role in "Something's Got to Give," which was retitled "Move Over, Darling." The only thing I enjoyed seeing in it was a picture taken in the early 50's of a studio party thrown for Monroe. It's not terribly clear because it's only a background shot of Doris on the dance floor at the party. But I always wondered if their paths had crossed. I'd love to submit the photo, but I have it on my e-reader.
Like Irene Dunne done.

Thanks so much Howard!
I think Goddess and The Girl Next Door will be an be an interesting read about two Hollywood legends. Move Over Darling is one of my favourite Doris Day films.
